Sterling neither boasted nor bowed. “Before the dynasty was founded,” he said, “the first emperor himself was a commoner. Your own ancestors clawed out their fortunes from nothing. With learning and vision, the road to high office stays open.”
The ease of that statement, the outsider’s detachment, carried the weight of someone accustomed to choosing generals, not serving them. Her private suspicions flared brighter.
She tapped a finger against her lip, eyes dancing. “Strive as you may, you will still stand beneath the Sixth Prince. You will always be subject, whereas the Sixth Prince-”
Sterling’s answer was a quiet challenge. “Shall I fetch him for you?”
“If that is what you truly want,” Fiona said, her voice threaded with playful warmth even though she could taste his faint annoyance. “I would not refuse. Still, you serve the Zonfrillo Estate, and I doubt you would hand me over so easily. Besides, your purpose tonight is surely larger than a simple errand for the Zonfrillos.”
That last remark hovered between a gentle test and an unmistakable challenge, the sort of line that forces hidden truths into the open.
“Change.” Sterling returned with a folded bundle–soft gowns in creams and pale lilac, clothes made for a woman rather than for any practical escape.
Before Fiona could thank him, he turned his back, spine held military–straight, granting her a fragile pocket of privacy.
Behind the gauze curtain, she slipped out of the rumpled garments in three quick motions, then called, “All set.”
Sterling neither answered nor looked. Instead, he draped his own heavy cloak over her shoulders, the wool still carrying the crisp scent of mountain air.
That single gesture told her everything–he meant to spirit her away tonight.
She swung her legs toward the floor, but he scooped her up without warning, settling her against his chest with effortless strength. “Hide your face,” he whispered, low and certain, before striding for the door.
Obediently, she drew the cloak’s collar over her head until even her breath vanished in its shadowed folds.
