The moment Soren stepped inside, a hush rippled through the room the way wind ripples water. Cheeks blossomed pink; even Mindy, who fancied Xavier, found herself smoothing her skirts, uncertain which man she would choose if asked.
Over the past half–year, the heir had shed the rawness of youth. His stance was straighter, his demeanor restrained, every sharp edge sheathed, yet an undeniable force still radiated from him, leaving hearts hammering.
Naomi dipped a small curtsy. “Soren.”
Fiona lifted her eyes and met his directly. Today, he had come straight from duty; the dark lines of his official uniform traced his shoulders, lending him a stern, almost ascetic air.
A memory flickered—of that night when the masked stranger named Sterling had guided her through moonlit corridors. She had guessed it was Soren, but until this moment, the theory had remained untested.
Soren’s gaze lingered a heartbeat longer, then slid away. “Time to leave.”
Naomi’s eyes brightened with mischief. “Soren, Fiona can’t solve this question. Could you have a look?”
He crossed to Fiona’s side, graceful despite the sword at his hip, sat, and plucked the wolf–hair brush from her fingers. With measured strokes, he began to sift through the calculations.
Composing herself, Fiona offered a poised smile. “Have you just returned from the palace, Lord Soren?”
Soren only made a soft, absent–minded sound, yet his dark eyes never left Fiona. “A few days from now, the Imperial Palace is hosting a polo match,” he said, voice light, almost lazy. “Your brother will ride, though on the opposing team. Tell me, Ms. Fiona, whose victory would you rather witness?”
Fiona’s smile was flawlessly polite, the sort worn at court when every word might become a rumor. “It is merely sport,” she answered. “Whether the laurels go to Lord Soren or to Vincent, I should be equally delighted.”
Soren studied that perfect smile. The faint lift of one brow said he did not believe her for an instant.
