“No one spoke at first. Time stretched, thin and delicate, like frost forming across glass.

Soren sat untouched by the tension, fingers loosely interlaced on his knee, posture as steady as a mountain peak. He seemed neither interested in conversation nor inclined to leave, simply present–immovably present–while the hush thickened around him.
Xavier, patrolling the palace these days must be exhausting, no? Hannah ventured, her eyes lingering on the crisp folds of his uniform, eager to puncture the quiet with something harmless.
“I’m still young. If I can climb a bit higher while my bones are willing, a little hardship is worth the climb.”
Hannah chuckled, the sound soft as worn silk. “Ambition in youth is a fine thing. Establish your career first, then think of raising a family–there’s wisdom in that order.”
Privately, she could find no fault in Xavier as a prospective grandson–in–law. Yet with her own son relegated to distant Junbert under the polite label of “demotion,” talk of an engagement felt ill–timed, better postponed until political clouds cleared.
Still, in her heart Xavier already stood beside Fiona. Every question she asked, every note of concern she voiced, rang with genuine affection for the man she half–considered family.
All the while Soren remained motionless, an outsider by choice. Even so, Elijah noticed that he made no move to depart.
Moments later a pair of attendants slipped in, carrying the gift Soren had ordered the Zonfrillo Estate to prepare.
They set the box on a lacquered table and drew back the silk cover to reveal a white–glazed porcelain chess set, the pieces so luminous they seemed carved from moonlight.,
Threads of enamel traced a delicate lattice across the board–work so rare that a thousand firings might yield only one unflawed square. Meryl recognized it at once–a treasure once reserved for the royal family of a fallen dynasty.
Meryl’s voice wavered. “This is… far too precious.” Yet her fingers hovered over the chessboard, reluctant to either touch or refuse it.
Naomi insisted, Soren said, tone even. “She’s always been fond of Fiona. Young ladies exchange curious trinkets; there is nothing for you to worry over.”

Fiona re–entered just then, halting at the sight of the gleaming board cradled in Soren’s hands. Her gaze lifted to meet his, uncertainty flickering like candlelight.
Soren held her eyes without a word, patience carved into every line of his posture, waiting for her to speak first.
She remembered his promise the other day: if she refused Marcus‘ marble chessboard, he would bring her something finer. The memory brushed her cheeks with heat.
“Thank you, Lord Soren, but the gift is too extravagant. I really can’t accept it.”
“You dislike it, Ms. Fiona?”
She shook her head, curls brushing her shoulders. “It isn’t that. It’s simply too valuable, and I could never repay such generosity. Your visit alone already honors our household.”
Soren considered, then spoke softly. “No return is needed. This is Naomi’s heartfelt token— nothing more.”
The others heard only a brother deferring to his sister’s whim. Fiona, however, understood the unspoken truth: the gift carried Soren’s own sentiments, delicately veiled.
A porcelain chessboard, chosen to outshine the marble one Marcus once offered, was Soren’s quiet way of stepping toward her—an unmistakable gesture of goodwill, and perhaps something deeper still.
He wondered what exactly he meant to prove. If she refused to accept trinkets from any other man, did he imagine he could dazzle her with something finer? Yet the promise of something finer had never mattered to her.
Lord Soren, Fiona said with a gentle smile that nevertheless left no room for argument, “I truly cannot accept your gift.”
Her refusal, polite yet cool, pricked the soft place he seldom admitted existed. Heʼsteadied his breath and spoke.
“Then allow me to send you a few books,” he offered, voice low but steady. “Whenever it suits you, call at Clearsky Pavilion and collect them–will that do, Ms. Fiona?”
That was, unmistakably, an invitation.
Fiona paused, weighing the wisdom of further entanglement for the moment. “Thank you, Lord Soren,” she said at last.
“There is no need to thank me, Ms. Fiona,” Soren answered, the tension in his shoulders

Rita, standing to one side, could not shake a sudden suspicion.
