Fiona had already decided. Lilith would never again be given back to Isabel. At the same time, she offered Joanna a graceful exit–after all, the duchess had never planned on treating the girl kindly.
Lilith turned, disbelief widening her eyes as tears gathered on her lashes.
No one had ever reached for her as though she were a treasure to be claimed. Even now her fourth sister did not look at her, yet Fiona’s fingers never once loosened around her small hand.
“The second branch has room to spare,” Meryl added softly. “Vincent is still unmarried and will soon head to the frontier. Let Lilith stay with me for company. When the time comes for her wedding, I will supply her dowry myself and see that she is married off with every honor.”
Deep down, Joanna caught herself nodding. Outfitting Lilith with a respectable trousseau would swallow more than a few pieces silver–money the main branch could scarcely spare. Truth be told, she had never wanted to carry that scalding burden in her arms to begin with.
Hannah, equally anxious, had already worn grooves in her thoughts over where to place the child. Trusting Lilith to Isabel again felt far too risky.
Hannah released a weary breath. “Since you have spoken, Lili will live with the second branch from this day forward.”
Almost at once Fiona felt warmth dampen her palm where it shielded Lilith’s eyes; silent tears seeped through her fingers like a soft, steady rain.
Soon, the Niven family’s overlooked fifth daughter would sleep in chambers trimmed with silk, bathed in a light gentle enough to cradle her dreams.
Before stepping away, Fiona slipped a supportive hand beneath Isabel’s elbow, steadying the woman as she rose from the veranda.
Isabel greeted Fiona with measured courtesy, yet the moment Lili’s name surfaced, resentment curdled her voice, as though every misery she bore had been sown by that child.
“Ms. Fiona, why waste your strength on her? She’s useless. She can’t lift a finger for you, and she is nothing but a thankless wretch.”
Fiona’s smile remained warm. “Mdm. Isabel, have you heard the saying–when you love a house, you even love the crows upon its roof?”

The question made Isabel’s pulse falter; uncase slid over her skin like cold mist.

In truth, were it not for Lilith, Fiona would never have allowed Isabel to remain beneath the Niven roof.
“Just be sure you have nothing to regret later, Mdm. Isabel.
Isabel shot a glance toward her daughter across the courtyard, then burst like tinder catching
flame.
“Regret what? She’s a concubine’s daughter–dead weight. Does she truly dream of turning into a phoenix overnight?”
Fiona stayed silent. Power, not affection, was what Isabel craved–yet she failed to see a daughter might one day hand her that very prize.
“So, Mdm. Isabel, are you saying the Niven family’s fifth daughter is that dead weight?”
Isabel’s breath hitched; color drained from her cheeks. “N–No, of course not. I would never dishonor the family,” she stammered, shrinking back into uneasy silence.
“Please, Mdm. Isabel, return and rest.” Fiona’s tone was all gentle courtesy.
Isabel exhaled in relief, half–convinced Fiona’s kindness was a warning not to hand Joanna fresh ammunition.
Yet the moment her husband returned, Isabel vowed she would claw back today’s humiliation; his indulgence had always been her shield.
When Joanna faced Fiona, she sighed. “Isabel will never keep quiet. Once your uncle comes home, she’ll raise the roof again.”
Then let her shout, Fiona replied, lips curving slightly. “You have already shown great forbearance. My uncle will know who stands in the right.”
Even deep indulgence sours when met with endless tantrums; beauty weaponized grows dull all too quickly.
Joanna allowed herself a small, wry smile. “You are right.”
Fiona did not mind Joanna fanning the flames; so long as the woman lived, she deserved every last scorch of them.
Joanna spoke bluntly, “All this ruckus you caused–was it not to create an excuse for moving Lili to the second branch?”

Had Isabel remained calm, people might have called Lili ungrateful for leaving her birth mother. Instead, Isabel’s cruelty would invite their sympathy–and clear the path for the child
