In this lifetime, she wielded a ruthlessness honed by honesty; hard edges, yes, yet never masked in deceit.
“Ms. Fiona would make an exceptional lady–one fit to rule any realm her heart might choose,” Xavier said, lifting his cup with the calm certainty of a man who rarely wasted words.
Fiona laughed softly, the porcelain rim brushing her lower lip. “So even you can resort to idle flattery, Mr. Xavier.”
“Flattery?” He shook his head, smile deepening. “Only the person granted room inside your heart can grasp how extraordinary you are.”
They sat beneath a veil of wisteria, conversation no louder than the drifting breeze.
Each had taken a single sip of Rivermuse Wine, careful not to overstep propriety.
To Fiona, Xavier was more than confidant. His presence sent ripples across waters she dared
not name.
The noon sun blazes overhead, yet bidding you farewell leaves me colder than winter, she murmured, eyes fixed on the brilliant sky.
Xavier answered with silence, a pause so long the cicadas reclaimed the garden path.
When she finally glanced sideways, she caught the longing hidden in his gaze, and the ache of it stung her chest.
He once said I resemble someone he loved. Am I only a mirror of that lost girl? The thought hovered, sharp and unanswered.
He rose first, bowing with perfect distance. Even in farewell he mastered restraint.
Only after she turned away did the restraint crack. His eyes followed the sway of her cloak until the corridor swallowed her, grief burning bright and unhushed.
He had forced himself to leave her repeatedly.
Half a year earlier, he rode to Junbert ahead of Zachary’s mission, clearing every bandit so her family would travel safe. The danger had felt like a small price.
Fiona stepped through the gates of the Luthor Estate and nearly collided with Soren, just arriving.

With Xavier soon departing, official matters piled high. Soren’s appearance at the estate surprised no one.
Soren was mid–instruction to Quentin when he saw her. His words fell away, breath suspended.
Quentin lifted his head, then fell silent; he knew how raw Soren’s mood had been where Fiona was concerned.
Fiona offered a polite nod and angled to leave.
“Must you flee from me as though I carried plague?” Soren asked, frustration snagging every syllable.
“I am not fleeing, Lord Soren. I simply have no idea what to say.” She hesitated. “Your offer to summon a royal physician for Lili–I’m profoundly grateful.”
“If your household affairs are settled, why haven’t you called at Clearsky Pavilion?”
“Only this moment have I found a breath of freedom,” she answered.
A bitter half–smile pulled at his mouth. “No time for Clearsky Pavilion, yet plenty for the Luthor Estate–how convenient.”
The remark shattered the fragile civility between them, turning what might have been harmless into a pointed accusation.
Fiona gave the coachman a slight nod and climbed into the lacquered carriage, silk skirts whispering against the step.
Merchants and clerks milled about the gate. Soren’s face darkened, but he did not follow; too many eyes watched.
With the Six Arts examinations complete, the ladies‘ academy fell into a welcome lull. Across town, the men’s academy also idled, and so a leisurely boating party on Azure Lake was arranged.
At Sweetbriar Academy, boys and girls usually moved along strictly segregated paths. A joint outing like today’s, where both sides could mingle beneath the open winter sky, came only once in a blue moon and sparked a quiet thrill.
They were sixteen, seventeen–an age when eyes lingered and hearts stuttered. All around, laughter felt sharper, colors looked louder, and every accidental brush of sleeves seemed to detonate tiny fireworks no tutor could extinguish.

Yet in the middle of that charged air stood Fiona, calm as a still pond. Romance, once a bright kite in her sky, had drifted out of sight. Even the most handsome lord could not stir the water.
The young lords, however, were anything but calm. News that her elder brother Zachary was stationed far away in Junbert only emboldened them. If they could not win her hand, at least they might feast their eyes upon her.
Whenever Fiona offered a courteous smile–soft as dusk light filtering through birch leaves- those same boys all but melted, tripping over themselves for the privilege of exchanging two simple words with her.
Following the master’s instructions, the ladies split into pairs and began pitching cloth wind- screens–makeshift tents that would shield them from the biting breeze sweeping off Azure
Lake.
When the time came for Fiona to choose a partner, she found herself alone. At nearly eighteen, she was the oldest lady still enrolled, and the younger girls naturally gravitated toward their own circle.
Naomi, standing several paces away, hesitated. She had half–raised a hand to volunteer before her brother Callum’s earlier warning echoed in her ears, rooting her feet to the ground.
