“If you truly felt nothing, you would have come to Clearsky Pavilion. I kept my distance to think, yes, but you saw only neglect.”
Truth be told, her absence had owed nothing to that earlier quarrel; Lilith’s crisis had simply intervened.
Yet the words he now spoke made it impossible not to read deeper meanings.
Had she misread? Or was this his way of bowing to her at last?
In her previous life, their three-year marriage had been ice and distant stars; never once had he lowered his proud head. In this rebirth, she was finally watching that aloof mask crack.
Perhaps every human bond was nothing more than a quiet contest of wills.
Soren paused, eyes flickering with a fragile hope. Then, in a voice so low it seemed to vanish among the pines, he asked, “Will you make peace with me?”
She had never truly accepted him. Her present compromise-allowing the briefest contact- was pure strategy, a way to bide her time until Prince Alexander faced pressure and she could extend a favor, slipping free of Soren’s pursuit.
Fiona was still weighing how to turn the moment to her greatest gain when Mindy’s voice floated on the breeze. “Fiona.”
Startled, Fiona shot Soren a quick glance. Only then did he unhurriedly bend and lower her from his back, as though setting down something precious and delicate.
Mindy, she answered with a courteous smile that masked the racing of her heartbeat.
“I was careless earlier. It’s my fault you were hurt.”
Before speaking further, Mindy stole a glance at Soren. The memory of his storm-dark face three hours ago still made her stomach knot.
Soren was usually reserved, yes, but almost never that openly furious.
In the forest she had blundered through brush for what felt like forever; when she finally met him, he was calm-until she mentioned Fiona’s fall. Then he chilled and demanded, “So you left her alone and came back?”

He had said little, yet the ice beneath those few words birthed genuine fear.

To Mindy, Soren had always been a man of cool composure, capable of handling anything without rudeness.
But she now understood that if Fiona had truly been harmed, Soren would have had no way to answer for it-especially given the uneasy truce between the Zonfrillo family and the Niven family.
She had stayed with the Royal Guard she summoned, too shaken to depart, and waited until this very moment.
Soren regarded her with a detached glance, irritation still flickering in the depths of his eyes.
Mindy bit her lip. “Fiona, I was wrong, truly. I didn’t leave you on purpose. Are you badly injured?”
Had she been malicious, Fiona would not be so kind. But she hadn’t, so Fiona simply said, “I’m all right.”
Soren eyed the Royal Guard behind them. “See Ms. Fiona and Ms. Ronson safely home.” With that, he swung into the saddle.
Forced into humility, Mindy lifted the carriage curtain. “Fiona, let me help you up.”
Fiona sensed her guilt; excessive politeness would only deepen it. She accepted with a nod. “Thank you, Mindy.”
Relieved, Mindy guided her inside, noticed Fiona’s dry lips, and pressed her own water flask into her hands.
“I’m not thirsty,” Fiona said, a gentle curve to her mouth.
Mindy frowned. “You haven’t drunk for so long-how can you not be thirsty? Did you already have water?”
Fiona offered no explanation.
Mindy’s curiosity flared. “When did Lord Soren find you? Were you both down at the foot of the cliff together?”
She recalled how naturally he had carried Fiona-like this wasn’t the first time.
“I fell asleep and never called out, so Lord Soren only just discovered me,” Fiona replied, choosing to bury the truth of the night, they had spent together.
