Chapter 221 Lingering Words Unspoken
Chapter 221 Lingering Words Unspoken.
If Fiona pushed for details, Soren’s answers halted, his eyes opaque as midnight glass. Recognizing the boundary, she withdrew without protest.
“In a few days, I must leave Jexburgh,” Soren told her.
“Will it be dangerous?” Fiona asked.
“Perhaps,” he admitted, never one to sweeten the truth.

Two months of quiet companionship had taught Fiona to read the subtle tides of his mind. “Then-if you can-write me a letter, just a line to say you’re safe,” she said, half-pretending indifference.
“If time allows, I will,” Soren answered, his eyes glinting with something she could not name.
This time, Soren’s journey beyond the capital lasted far longer than the others.
Hillary’s letter had drifted into the Niven residence like a silk ribbon on the wind, inviting Fiona to join her for a pilgrimage to Frostenden Temple. After an afternoon of gentle coaxing, bright smiles, and wide-eyed vows of everlasting friendship, Fiona finally surrendered and agreed.
When the day came, Hillary arrived in a rose-pink, round-collared jacket that bounced with every step. From afar she resembled a sugar-glazed pastry-soft, sweet, and impossible not to
squeeze.
“Fiona!” Hillary chirped, sliding her arm through Fiona’s with practiced familiarity.
“What moved you to pray for blessings so suddenly?” Fiona asked, matching Hillary’s pace up the stone path.
“Broadmoor is restless again. I’m frightened for Father,” Hillary admitted, her voice trembling like a lantern in wind. “You’ve never lived there, so you can’t imagine how war turns night into a long scream. Each time it happens, I lie awake until dawn.”
Her instincts are keen, Fiona mused, recalling another life she alone remembered. In four months Daniel will intercept a blade meant for Alexander, save him, and rise like a comet. Was that ambush fate -or someone’s design?
“Don’t fret,” Fiona murmured. “A righteous man like Mr. Chambers carries heaven’s own shield.”

“I swear I’ll never set foot in Broadmoor again—no matter how much silver they wave in my face,” Hillary declared, stamping a boot for emphasis.
Fiona sighed inwardly. Hillary had made that promise before-yet life, more often than not, refused to honor vows.
Inside the incense-scented hall, Hillary knelt. Each bow of her head met the cold stone with a soft thud-firm, measured, utterly sincere.
Fiona whispered petitions for her father and brothers. Remembering Soren, she added a safety charm for him as well-partly to tease him later, mostly to pray he would return unscathed.
“And may Lord Soren come home safe, too,” Hillary chimed, palms pressed together.
Fiona paused, glancing back. Hillary remained kneeling, eyes closed, devotion pouring from her like light through stained glass.
Only after a long silence did she rise and loop her fingers through Fiona’s once more, her smile bright as sunrise over temple eaves.
“Who’s that safety charm for? Your brother, perhaps?” Hillary asked, spying the small packet in Fiona’s hand.
Fiona answered with nothing but a small, mysterious smile.
“Then I’ll fetch charms for Father, Lord Soren, and Duke Zonfrillo as well!” With a spin of silk skirts, Hillary hurried toward the abbot’s chambers.
She emerged a moment later, triumphant, scrolls of crimson thread dangling between her fingers.
“They say Lord Soren has left Jexburgh for ages,” Hillary lamented. “I planned to visit the Zonfrillo Estate and beg archery lessons. Roxanne and Naomi shoot so well after his coaching! He taught me in Broadmoor when we were small, but I’ve forgotten everything.”
“Ask him again when he returns,” Fiona suggested softly.
“Hillary, my third brother hardly spares time even for me,” Naomi laughed the next morning in class. “Try Callum instead. For a tiny lady like you, he’ll be patience itself.”
Callum, awkward with grown women, possessed surprising gentleness toward childlike girls- and far more patience than Soren ever displayed.
“I still want Lord Soren first,” Hillary said bravely. “If he refuses, I’ll hunt down Callum

“Why the insistence on my third brother?” Naomi asked, eyebrow arched in genuine curiosity.
