Chapter 243 Severed Promises
Her words struck the chord Soren guarded above all–the fate of the Zonfrillo Estate.
Soren’s mouth twisted into a half–smile, half–sneer.

“I am no slave to omens,” he said. “Yes, there are fractures between us, but they can be mended. What happened in the last life need not repeat itself. Fiona, the man I was then is not the man standing here.”
“I am not trapped in the past,” she returned evenly. “I simply do not love the Soren before me. In truth, I felt more for the Soren of another lifetime than for you now.”
The admission landed like a silent blade, yet it was honest. Had the former Soren–cold, distant, but still regarding her as his wife–appeared now, her heart might have stirred.
When she first awoke in this new timeline, memories of that man stung like an old bruise- pain that belonged solely to the husband who once called her wife.
Such a bond, forged in vows and shared nights, could not be scrubbed from the soul with ease.
“Is this because of the man you wed after me?” Soren asked, the question roughened by something dangerously close to jealousy.
For a heartbeat Fiona almost forgot that, in Soren’s eyes, she already belonged to another man. The memory returned like cold water, forcing her shoulders to square.
“He matters to me as well. He sits inside my thoughts every day, and I cannot let go of him,” she said, refusing to deny what was written on her heart.
Soren’s voice slid between them, quieter than usual, yet edged in something sharp. “Do you love him?” Soren asked, every syllable weighed and measured.
Fiona hesitated, then uttered a lie she had practiced for nights. “I do, Lord Soren. I love him very much. That is why, in this life, I beg you to let me chase the one my heart chooses. Take it as repayment for the kindness you once showed me.”
The blunt admission landed like a stone on Soren’s chest, igniting a dull ache made of jealousy and wounded pride. “Then what am I to you?” Soren murmured. “Nothing but half–truths and convenient smiles?”
A flicker of alarm passed through Fiona. She could not recall ever trying to deceive him; she had merely complied, too frightened to offend the man who held her future.

She steadied her breath. “I wish you happiness, Lord Soren. In our last life, somewhere in Broadmoor you favored a lady–I never learned if it was Luna or Hillary. Perhaps look for her this time and see.”
Offering such guidance felt, to her, the height of courtesy. If fate ever brought Soren and that woman together, he might even thank Fiona for planting the idea.
Soren’s face regained its usual composure, but his tone cut. “If you wish to refuse me, just refuse me. Do not hide behind invented shields.”
The restraint he showed eased Fiona’s nerves. Perhaps he truly was as rational as everyone claimed. If more people loved this way, she thought, hearts would break less often.
Fiona bowed her head. “Thank you, Lord Soren.”
“I have not agreed to anything,” Soren replied, voice cool as dusk.
Fiona fell silent, words deserting her for a moment.
She let out a weary breath. “Must we continue like this, Lord Soren?”
Soren himself could not explain the stubbornness knotting inside his ribs. If he agreed now, the chance to stand beside her as husband and wife would vanish forever. The prospect hurt in ways he had never prepared for.
“Let us think it over,” he said after a pause. “Spend a little more time with me–nothing is impossible.”
“What I want is for our paths never to cross again,” she answered, voice steady.
“Will you run back to the husband who buried you before your youth had even finished?” he asked with a cold, thin smile.
She lifted her chin. “If we must tally the blame, my death was tied far closer to you than to him.”
Soren’s lips parted, but whatever argument he had prepared dissolved under the weight of that
truth.
“If anyone is cursed for me, it is you, Lord Soren. Forgive me, but I fear an early grave all over again.”
In the main hall of the Zonfrillo Estate, Penelope at last turned to Meryl with a more practical
matter in mind.
