For the month before the vows, custom kept the bride and groom apart. Yet the closer the date crept, the more fiercely each hungered for word of the other’s every move.
“He’s personally arranging the courtyard you two will share,” Fiona replied, her tone laced with gentle mischief.
“Will you keep an eye on him for me?” Yolanda asked, half–laughing, “What he likes, I often don’t. I’d hate to redecorate the day after we wed.”
“Supervision isn’t needed, Fiona assured her. “Ulrich corners me daily to ask about your favorite colors, scents, and seasons. Trust me–you’ll adore the place.”
Hope flickered bright in Yolanda’s eyes. If Ulrich cherished her so deeply, and if the powerful Niven household valued her likewise, then even lean years beside him would taste sweet.
Fiona saw that unmistakable glow–every young woman carried it on the eve before marriage, convinced life ahead would be nothing but perfectly tuned duets. She also knew how quickly time sanded that shine to dust.
Yolanda’s nature was almost painfully kind. In another lifetime, schemers had ensnared her. and distance had grown between her and Ulrich. Their days together fell far short of the harmony she once pictured.
Still, Fiona could not fault Ulrich. Where profit lives, conflict always follows, and blood forever chooses blood. No matter how fond Joanna or Hannah were of Yolanda, their loyalties would bend toward Ulrich–just as Penelope treated Fiona well yet would forever defend Soren first.
For now, Fiona refused to cloud the moment. Within the Niven household she could, at least, smooth a few of Yolanda’s future troubles.
“As long as I can see you often once I’m in the Niven manor, I’ll be content, Yolanda said softly. She glanced past Fiona and added, “Lilith, do visit me often, too.”
Lilith tore her gaze from the dazzling gown. “If you’re ever bored, just let me know.”
Yolanda’s smile blossomed.
Fiona, standing between them, could not keep a bright laugh from slipping out.

Guests poured through the Wagner gates day after day. After barely an hour of polite chatter and endless admiration for the gown, Fiona and Lilith excused themselves and headed home.

Lilith leaned toward Fiona, eyes sparkling as she watched the distant procession. “Yolanda’s wedding dress is breathtaking,” she murmured, the wonder in her voice too bright to hide.
Born a daughter of the second household, Lilith had learned early to read a room. She knew that some dismissed children born of concubines, and so, even with close friends in the same position, she rarely spoke loudly in public.
Besides, she sensed that Yolanda longed to talk with Fiona, not with her, and Lilith had no wish to intrude.
Yet when it was only Fiona beside her, those careful walls slipped, and Lilith found herself confiding like a younger sister stealing a quiet moment.
“If you truly like it,” Fiona said, turning her calm gaze on Lilith, “then when your own wedding comes. I’ll see to it you have one just as splendid.”
Lilith blinked, stunned, then quickly gathered herself. “Fiona, your kindness means the world, but I’ll likely marry a secondary son at best. If I flaunt such finery, my husband’s household might resent me.”
That admission tasted bitter. Ambition still stirred beneath her modest words; she had dreamed of something better. Yet how many concubines‘ daughters ever rose beyond the fringes of grand houses, their husbands forever satellites rather than suns?
“The brighter the gown, the clearer our family’s regard, Fiona said, lightly pinching the delicate skin of Lilith’s wrist in a sisterly tease. “People think twice before bullying a girl they know the Niven family cherishes. Concentrate on your studies, accumulate your own bargaining chips. I’ll make plans for you as well, and I will never marry you off lightly.”
A whirl of emotions tightened in Lilith’s chest. When she had first sought Fiona’s c had been painfully pragmatic. With no hope in her mother, she meant to leverage Fiona, to network, to gather favors.
She also trusted her own looks; perhaps not equal to Fiona or Rita, but striking enough that some prospective groom would notice her.
“Beauty may open doors, Fiona said, voice suddenly solemn, “but it never keeps them open. Master your studies. Knowledge belongs to you alone, and the reputation that comes with excellence forces a husband’s family to respect you from the heart.”

Tears slipped free before she could stop them. Fiona had offered such counsel before, yet this was the first time Lilith truly heard it.
Fiona drew a lace handkerchief and dabbed the wetness from Lilith’s cheeks with gentle precision. “Lili, remember this–you are a daughter of the Niven family, and I will always be
