Chapter 168
She swallowed them, forcing a weak smile.
“It’s nothing. I’ll be fine soon.”
“Mmm.”
Geoffrey didn’t know why her reassurance only deepened his worry.
Night.
Maureen still burned with low–grade fever. After bathing and taking medicine, she lay cradled in Geoffrey’s arms.
She asked softly: “Tell me something–are disabled people born less than others?”
She’d posed this question once in childhood.
Back then he’d said everyone was a little angel sent to earth by heaven. Some just got hurt falling down. We’re all equal.
Geoffrey didn’t know why she’d ask now, answering simply: “Naturally.”
“This world isn’t fair. People aren’t equal from birth.”
Maureen’s throat tightened.
“Exactly. Inequality starts from birth.”
Geoffrey noticed her mood shift, resting his large hand on her shoulder: “That’s precisely why we must rely on later efforts to create everything we desire.”
Maureen clenched his shirt.
“Okay,
I understand.”
She thought her Geoff had simply grown up, weathered too much, hence his answer differed
from before.

Still unwilling to accept, Maureen pressed on: “Geoff, I can’t sleep.
Can we visit our childhood hideaway?”
Childhood hideaway…
Surprise flickered in Geoffrey’s eyes.
“What hideaway?”
Maureen’s throat tightened further. Could this man truly not be the one she’d loved since childhood?
After a long hesitation, she offered a bitter smile.
“It’s a small pond near the Ramirez estate. My secret spot as a child. Maybe I never mentioned it.‘ “1
Geoffrey found her peculiar today, constantly dwelling on the past.
Over the years, he’d long forgotten many things.
Not sure if it was to avoid disappointing Maureen, but in the end Geoffrey still took her out.
Tonight, the rain finally stopped for a while.
A full moon hung in the sky, moonlight spilling everywhere.
Geoffrey followed Maureen’s directions to the small pond, or to be precise, what had now become a park.
The original small pond had turned into an artificial lake.
Fortunately, everyone had gone back by then, so there weren’t many people around.
Maureen wrapped herself in a coat and got out of the car.
Even though it wasn’t winter yet, she was wearing much more than most people.
Geoffrey walked beside her: “Is this the place?”
“Yeah, it’s changed a lot.”
Maureen said.

But Geoffrey had no memory of it.
He had come to the Ramirez Family’s place a few times as a child, but never to the back hill, let alone knew there was a small pond here.
Maureen walked onto the wooden bridge, stood in the middle, looked up at the full moon, as if she had returned to her childhood.
She and Geoffrey had made wishes together.
Her wish was to marry Geoff when she grew up, and it seemed that wish had come true.
Geoffrey stood not far away, watching the person on the bridge. Moonlight fell on her serene face, and she seemed to blend into the surroundings, becoming a breathtaking painting.
Maureen looked back at Geoffrey: “Geoff, why aren’t you coming over?”
Geoffrey stared at her, dazed, and after a while, he snapped out of it, walking slowly towards her.
When he reached her, he took her hand.
Her hand was icy cold, without any
“Why is your hand so cold?”
warmth.
Maureen smiled, her eyes crinkling: “Cold hands mean a warm heart.”
These childish words were once said by Geoffrey to her.
But now, he sounded unfamiliar, and he pulled her directly into his embrace, placing his hand inside his trench coat.
“One more minute, and in a minute, we’ll go back.”
“Just like that?”
Maureen looked at him, hoping he would remember the past, even just a little bit.
Unfortunately, no.
Geoffrey seemed to really not remember coming here with her in childhood to make a wish, and other things.
