Geoffrey’s gaze never left Maureen.

He knew those things were his fault. He admitted it.

Maureen’s heart clenched violently. When she glanced at Geoffrey, her eyes reddened at the

corners.

Geoffrey hadn’t expected Tyler to be so blunt. He cleared his throat softly, prompting Tyler to halt his aggressive questioning.

Maureen forced herself to stay calm. From a distance, she could see the evidence consisted of photographs, though their contents remained unclear.

Tyler handed her a stack of photos–images from the past, capturing moments she’d lured Geoffrey into for the sake of conceiving.

Her mind went blank. Hanging at her sides, her hands clenched into fists.

She never imagined this would backfire, nor that Geoffrey still possessed these photos.

Katherine gave her a reassuring look. At worst, these photos could only prove emotional attachment to the court.

But among divorce prerequisites was domestic violence–Geoffrey’s emotional neglect qualified.

Yet the next second, Tyler dismissed the emotional abuse claim.

“Your Honor,” he addressed the judge, “the opposing counsel accuses my client of emotional abuse. But how does one define such abuse?”

Katherine instinctively averted her eyes when their glances met.

Tyler stepped closer. “Attorney White, do you have hospital records confirming this diagnosis?”

His proximity made Katherine’s breath hitch.

She trembled: “Isn’t severe depression the best proof?”

Tyler withdrew his gaze and continued: “As I understand, depression stems from five primary causes: first, genetic predisposition; second, illness and health issues; third, substance and alcohol abuse; fourth, personality factors; and fifth, social or external influences.

“Ms. White, how can you assert your client’s depression resulted from my client?”

Tyler produced evidence: “These documents show Ms. Ramirez began heavy drinking two years into her marriage. Her mother, Ms. Noelle Davey–a renowned dance scholar–underwent psychiatric evaluation confirming minor mental disorders. Ms. Ramirez herself was born with hearing impairment.”
