Chapter265
Just then, the examination concluded. The doctor warned of threatened miscarriage but assured timely intervention allowed bed rest to stabilize the
pregnancy.
After thanking the doctor and taking the prenatal medication, Maureen followed Geoffrey back.
“Thanks for today.”
If Geoffrey hadn’t been there when she fell, the consequences would’ve been unthinkable.
Geoffrey felt her hand clutching his sleeve, so he reached out and held it: “You’re my wife, no need to thank me.”
His hand enveloped hers tightly, warm and secure. She glanced at Geoffrey several times before finally pulling her hand away.
Once bitten, twice shy.
She couldn’t bring herself to trust Geoffrey again.
Geoffrey’s hand hung frozen mid–air, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly.
The car fell into an unnerving silence.
They finally arrived home.
Maureen helped Geoffrey out of the car. At the doorway, she suddenly heard muffled sobs.
Someone crying?
Maureen hurried inside and flipped on the light.
Under the dim light, Jacob was covered in tear tracks.
When he saw Maureen, he quickly wiped his tears: “Mom, Mommy.”
Maureen froze.
“Jacob, why are you crying?”
She’d never seen this little one cry before.

Jacob immediately turned his back, and only after making sure his tears were wiped clean did he dare look at Maureen: “I wasn’t crying.”
He glanced at Geoffrey behind Maureen, a lingering fear in his heart.
Half a Reenie ago.
He’d gotten up to use the bathroom and found the room light on, with no one in Mommy’s room or Geoffrey’s room.
He thought Mommy had been kidnapped by Geoffrey, then blamed himself for failing to keep watch properly–that’s why he cried.
Never expected to get caught–so embarrassing, utterly embarrassing.
“When I was using the bathroom, I accidentally got water in my eyes.”
Jacob explained with a straight face.
Maureen didn’t call him out.
She figured he’d woken up alone to use the bathroom, hadn’t seen her, got scared, and cried.
Jacob immediately changed the subject: “Mommy, where did you and Uncle Geoffrey go so late?”
Maureen didn’t want him worrying, so she lied: “Nowhere special, just went for a walk.”
A walk in freezing weather?
Jacob had been worried for nearly half a Reenie.
They must’ve walked outside for at least half a Reenie?
Jacob glared at Geoffrey. Could that scumbag dad have tricked Mom?
Mom’s too kind–hearted, while that scumbag’s full of schemes.
Geoffrey seemed to sense his gaze. His thin lips parted:
“It was too cold outside. We took a drive instead of walking.”
He said this deliberately, making Jacob imagine things.
A man and woman alone in the car late at night…
Though Jacob was just a kid, he’d watched plenty of TV and knew a thing or two.

He instantly felt threatened, forgetting all about embarrassment.
“Uncle Geoffrey, could you sleep with me tonight?
I can’t fall asleep.”
He absolutely couldn’t let that scumbag sleep with Mom, so he had to sacrifice himself.
“No.”
Geoffrey refused flatly. “I like sleeping alone.”
“Then what’ll you do when you get married?
Still sleep alone?”
Jacob asked defiantly.
Geoffrey curled his lips into a cold smile. “Ever taken biology?
Know that when a man and woman get together, it’s like one person…”
Before he could finish, Maureen grabbed his arm.
“Shut your mouth!”
She hissed, her ears burning crimson.
How could he say such things to a child?
Disgraceful old man!
Geoffrey fell silent.

Jacob was suddenly curious: “Mommy, why do a man and woman become like one person when together?”
