A mere investment deal would never get her face–to–face with Geoffrey himself!

So, she wanted to pique Geoffrey’s interest and make him come see her himself!

Maureen pushed the car door open and stepped out.

The Sutton Group representative had been waiting at the entrance early. Seeing the arrival was an exquisitely dressed woman, he looked puzzled.

“You must be Boss Maureen?”

Maureen neither confirmed nor denied it: “Problem?”

While the man was stunned, Maureen pulled out their previous correspondence records.

He hastily shook his head: “No, no! You’re such a kindhearted angel.”

More like a sucker.

He led Maureen to the meeting room before going to fetch the negotiator.

Soon came footsteps, then the sound of a door closing.

She glanced up, locking eyes with Geoffrey’s icy stare.

Their gazes met, Geoffrey’s eyes full of scrutiny.

Maureen feigned surprise: “You?”

Geoffrey didn’t buy her amnesia act. Seeing her still pretending, he stepped forward.

“What luck.”

He deliberately stressed those two words.

Maureen kept playing dumb: “You’re handling this project?”

“To be precise, I run Sutton Group. Geoffrey.”

Geoffrey stared intently at her.

Today, she’d changed into formal wear, looking sharp and professional.

Before coming, he’d done his homework. She’d started a trading company abroad, and just last month discussed fund- ing charity work through the Sutton Group with her business manager.

“Ah, so you’re Mr. Sutton. Pleasure to meet you.”

Maureen’s expression remained unchanged, utterly unreadable.

“My investment this time-”

Geoffrey cut her off before she could finish.

“Let’s skip business today. Tell me about this amnesia of yours.”

He settled comfortably, waiting for her to keep lying.

The atmosphere grew thick and strange, the air suddenly thin.

Facing this woman who’d chased after him for over a decade, Geoffrey couldn’t quite name the feeling twisting inside

him.

“Besides forgetting me?

Who else do you remember?

Gareth?”

The old Maureen would have been hurt hearing this.

But now, she knew her sick little boy mattered most.

“I don’t understand what you mean, but I’m not lying. I had severe depression.”

“With depression, brain cells enter a near–stagnant state. All cognitive functions decline–slowed reactions, memory loss, even intermittent amnesia.”

The doctor said my inability to recall certain people or events might be the brain’s protective mechanism–it’s afraid that remembering them would bring heartache.

Geoffrey had seen Maureen’s past medical reports and knew she suffered from severe depression.

He’d researched the illness–it could cause memory loss, but never mentioned forgetting an entire person!

They’d known each other for over a decade!

Seeing Geoffrey remain silent, Maureen stared at him. “You’re not someone who hurt me before, are you? Otherwise, why wouldn’t I remember you?”

The words pierced Geoffrey like a sharp thorn.

His thin lips parted, voice icy. “Ms. Ramirez overthink things. We’re merely passing acquaintances.”

Geoffrey decided–since Maureen wanted to pretend, he’d let her pretend.

After all, he’d never truly considered them husband and wife from the beginning.

Before leaving, Geoffrey had his people have Maureen sign the contract.

Back in his office,

Geoffrey chain–smoked again.

Maureen’s words echoed: “You’re not someone who hurt me before, are you? Otherwise, why wouldn’t I remember you?”

It felt like a cotton ball lodged in his chest–stifling, suffocating.

When Wayne entered, the room swam with smoke.

Ever since Maureen vanished four years ago, Mr. Sutton’s smoking had spiraled out of control.

Why did it continue now that she’d returned?

“Investigate thoroughly. Whatever it takes–I must know everything that happened to Maureen these past four years!”

Geoffrey’s gaze locked onto Wayne.

Wayne froze. “Mr. Sutton, I already had people investigate, but we found nothing. Her overseas records are strictly confidential.”

“Then mobilize other overseas resources to investigate!”

Geoffrey’s words stunned Wayne again.

Wayne knew exactly what “other resources” meant. Apart from fighting for control of the Sutton Family, Geoffrey had never deployed them before.

Now for Maureen?

Wayne didn’t dare ask why, just obeyed.
