“Sean, if you’ve got your eye on someone, tell me. I’ll help vet her.”

This woman really took him for a fool.

Sean snorted: “Vet her?

Where’d you get that confidence?”

“Don’t forget–to my grandfather, you’re just a court jester now.

Anyone you pick? He’d disapprove, and she’d never fit into my circle.”

“You should know that better than anyone.”

Sean hung up. Andrea’s face instantly turned ashen, ugly beyond words.

As an orphan, nothing stung more than being looked down upon since childhood!

Sean’s words dragged up memories of years ago–how she’d made a fool of herself trying to fit in with those trust fund kids!

“Once I become Mrs. Sutton, we’ll see who dares underestimate me!”

Andrea made no mention of Maureen, clearly unaware she’d returned.

Sean waited outside Beverly Hills Villa Estate.

“Sir, Ms. Ramirez hasn’t stepped out all day.”

“Shall I knock?”

The bodyguard dared not keep him waiting.

Sean declined.

“No need. I’ll wait right here for her to come out.”

Learning of Maureen’s return yesterday sparked unprecedented excitement in him–he’d burned to find her and demand answers about the past.

Yet memories of how he’d once bullied her froze him in place.

He waited over two hours.

Maureen felt dizzy and muddled after catching a chill; last night’s icy soak had taken its toll.

Justin bought her medicine, but she still felt wretched.

Draping a coat over yesterday’s scratches, she left the mansion for fresh air.

Though summer blazed, she felt no heat through her long sleeves and pants.

The doctor warned her frail health nearly hospitalized her again after last night’s ordeal.

It seems I’ll have to plan carefully from now on.

Maureen walked on, not noticing the business car parked nearby. Just as she was about to pass it again, Sean couldn’t hold back and rushed out.

“Mau… Maureen.”

Maureen stopped in her tracks, turned to look at him, and froze.

She didn’t answer.

Sean walked straight toward her. For a moment, he had so much to ask, but what came out was: “How have you been all these years?”

How have I been?

Maureen sneered inwardly.

Wasn’t this guy the one who most wished for me to be miserable?

She pressed her lips together, tightened her grip on the pepper spray she carried, and prepared to see what he’d try

next.

Seeing she didn’t speak, Sean thought she hadn’t brought her hearing aid.

“Wasn’t it just partial hearing loss?

Why can’t you hear me even when I’m speaking like this now?”

Maureen’s long hair covered her hearing aid.

Seeing his misunderstanding, she didn’t bother to explain and kept walking.

Sean followed and grabbed her wrist: “Has your condition worsened?

Let me take you to the hospital to get checked.”

Condition worsened?

Go to the hospital?

This sudden concern made Maureen suspect he was trying a new way to torment her.

Maureen still remembered when she and Geoffrey had been married for two years, at a New Year’s Reunion.

Sean suddenly changed his attitude toward her and started calling her sister–in–law.

He also asked her to come to a party.

But when she got to the party, Geoffrey wasn’t there. A bunch of trust fund kids made fun of her, pouring glass after glass of red wine over her head.

At the time, Sean was sitting at the head of the table, watching it all with a smile. He was no different from a devil.
