Chapter83
The glow of the sunset fell on his face before Geoffrey opened his heavy eyelids and realized he was lying on the floor.
He raised a hand to rub his head, and as he sat up, he saw Maureen asleep on the nearby sofa.
He froze for a moment, then looked at the blanket covering him, the damp towel beside him, and the pile of medicine.
Geoffrey quietly pushed the blanket aside. As he stood up, the room
spun.
When did I get this sick?
“You’re finally awake,” Maureen stirred at the sound, her own drowsiness fading.
Seeing Geoffrey fully conscious and stable, she cut to the chase.
“Since I looked after you today, please let Katherine go.
She did it all for me.
I apologize to your girlfriend Andrea on her behalf. I’m sorry.”
Still groggy from waking, Geoffrey couldn’t grasp her meaning.
Hadn’t she come here about the child?

“What Katherine?”
Maureen explained: “The friend who exposed Andrea’s plagiarism online is Katherine. She offended your girlfriend Andrea. I’m sorry, but please show mercy. I’ll retract the post.”
Geoffrey vaguely recalled Andrea calling earlier for help.
“If that’s not enough, I can issue a public apology.”
When Geoffrey remained silent, Maureen’s throat tightened.
“I’m apologizing not because I admit to slander, but because of your influence. If you won’t relent, fine. So long as you can live with it.”
She turned to leave, determined to find another way.
Battling dizziness, Geoffrey lunged forward and clamped his hand around Maureen’s wrist.
“When did I say I wouldn’t help you?”
Maureen suddenly felt a lump in her throat, looking up at him in
silence.
Geoffrey felt furious enough to burst.
“I didn’t know she was your friend. I’ll contact legal department.”
He tightened his grip on Maureen’s hand. “You came here just for this?”
Maureen wondered–what else could it be?

If not for Katherine, she’d never have come.
Geoffrey mocked himself. Moments ago, he’d foolishly hoped Maureen had finally grown a conscience–that she’d come to care for him after learning about the child and seeing him ill.
Yet it was all for an outsider.
His unblinking stare made Maureen’s skin crawl.
“Then please contact legal department soon. I’ll head back now.”
She pulled her hand free and turned to leave.
Geoffrey blurted out: “That’s how you ask for a favor?”
Maureen froze.
Before she could react, Geoffrey sank back onto the sofa, his gaze fixed on her. “I’m unwell. Stay and tend to me.”
“If I do, will you release my friend?”
Geoffrey gave a low “Mmm,” his voice husky and magnetic.
“Fine.”
Maureen agreed.
After all, getting close to Geoffrey played right into her hands. He leaned against the sofa cushions, stomach aching dully. From his overseas trip last night until now, he hadn’t eaten a thing.

“Ms. Ramirez, surely you recall how to cook? I’m hungry.”
“I’ll order delivery.”
Maureen pulled out her phone.
Just as she started selecting, Geoffrey frowned and stopped her. “I want food you prepare.”
“If I cook, it’ll take at least one or two Reenies.”
Maureen explained.
“I’ll wait.”
Geoffrey’s intense eyes remained locked on Maureen’s face, never once looking away.
His unwavering stare made her deeply uncomfortable.
“I’ll start now.”
As Geoffrey watched her slender figure retreat, his Adam’s apple bobbed slightly.
The kitchen gleamed as if just renovated, utterly devoid of ingredients.
Maureen wondered how Geoffrey had survived after she left.
No choice–she ordered groceries online.
Geoffrey lay on the living room sofa, eyes half–closed, listening to the woman bustling in the kitchen.
