Chapter 101: What If

Chapter 101: What If

Marco moved swiftly. His long strides began eating up the distance as he neared Grace. His intent had been to stop her before she could indulge any further, but by the time he reached her, the words had already left her lips.

To my beloved Grace,

You have captured my heart, and now I am yours. Please accept this token of love and expect more from me. I will see you soon.

Love, KS.

Grace let out a small chuckle as her fingers brushed over the elegant calligraphy. Wow, someone has nice handwriting, she murmured in appreciation.

Marco’s stomach twisted uncomfortably at the sheer amusement in her voice.

Grace turned her attention to the suited man standing before her, holding the letter as she gave him a curious look. Are you KS?

she asked with an arched brow, oblivious to Marco’s looming presence behind her.

Xy who was ever composed, gave a short shake of his head. I am merely the delivery man.

Grace scoffed, holding the flowers tightly. A delivery guy in a custommade suit?

Her skepticism was evident, but instead of pressing further, she exhaled and gave him a small smile. Well, anyway, tell whoever sent thisthank you.

She lifted the bouquet to her nose, inhaling the scent of the fresh roses.

Xy had expected Grace Blackwood to be many thingscrass, sharptongued, and unpredictable. But this softness, this moment of quiet gratitude, was something he hadn’t anticipated.

I will relay your message,he said with a short nod before taking a step back. I shall take my leave now.

And when he finally left, a cold voice suddenly cut through the moment.

Grace.

The unexpected sound of her name made Grace nearly drop the bouquet. She immediately spun around, startled, only to find Marco standing mere feet away with his sharp gaze locked onto her.

Grace blinked up at Marco, What the hell is wrong with you? Are you trying to give me a heart attack?

Marco who had rushed over without thinking, now acted as if he had just arrived. His gaze flickered to the roses in her hands, to the elegantly penned letter, and finally back to her face which was still softened by the lingering amusement from the message.

Who was that? His voice was clipped and firm.

Grace raised a brow. A delivery guy.

Marco let out a scoff. A delivery guy dressed in a tailored suit?

That’s exactly what I said! She replied, shaking her head. But he wouldn’t say anything else.

Marco’s lips pressed into a thin line as his gaze darkened. And the letter?

Grace glanced down at the paper in her hand and smiled. It’s quite sweet, isn’t it?She read it again as the beautiful strokes of the calligraphy drew another chuckle from her. Someone is trying to woo me.

Marco didn’t like the way she said that.

KS,he muttered, eyes narrowing as he quickly ran through the possibilities. You don’t even know who that is.

Grace smirked. Well, I suppose I’ll find out soon enough, won’t At least that was what he said in his letter. Could this be my fiancé? Hm, but we’ve never met.

Marco took a slow, deep breath while trying to keep his temper in check. Theight of her genuinely pleased, openly accepting a gift from another manitched beneath his skin. It made something sharp and possessive coil in his chest.

And before he could stop himself, the words left his mouth.

Throw it away.

Grace blinked in utter shock. Excuse me?

Marco’s jaw tightened as he watched Grace clutch the bouquet like a prized possession. The sight of her with another man’s flowers, another man’s words, set something ablaze inside him! He stepped forward, his voice low and firm.

The flowers. The letter. Throw them away.

Grace blinked at him before scoffing. What? No.She turned on her heel, planning to walk away, but Marco was faster. His hand shot out, wrapping around her arm in a firm yet careful grip.

Why are you entertaining suitors? His voice dropped, the warmth of his breath ghosting over her ear as he leaned in slightly. Grace arched a brow, meeting his gaze with unwavering defiance. You forget your place, Marco.

His grip tightened for a brief second before loosening. He hesitated. He shouldn’t have said anything, should’ve let it go. But the words slipped past his lips before he could stop them.

You said you were in love with me.He reminded sternly.

But Grace didn’t even flinch. True, she admitted easily yet her tone was void of the emotions that used to lace her voice whenever she spoke about him. But I’m getting married anyway, so what’s the point?

She lifted a shoulder in a careless shrug. Might as well accept gifts from a random stranger than a rejection from a friend. With that, she effortlessly pulled her arm free and resumed walking while her silk dress swayed around her legs, brushing against the grass as she moved.

Marco’s chest tightened. He should have let her go. He should have walked away.

But he didn’t.

What if I told you that I love you?

Grace froze.

Marco swallowed hard, taking a step closer. Don’t marry anyone, he continued, Run away with me instead.

Slowly, Grace turned looking at him with furrowed brows. Marco exhaled with his pulse hammering as he watched her lift her hand. But instead of reaching for him, she gestured toward a nearby maid.

The woman hurried over, and with a calm smile, Grace carefully handed her the bouquet. Bring this to my room. Place it on my bed.

The maid nodded and quickly left before Grace finally faced him fully, crossing her arms. Her lips curled into a smile, but there was no warmth in it.

What did you say again?she asked.
