Chapter 109: Disbelief

Chapter 109: Disbelief

Why not you?he calmly said like there was no other answer that could exist in his world.

Grace stood there quietly, her eyes searching his face as the wind played gently between them. His words sank into her slowly, spreading warmth through her chest. She hadn’t expected that kind of answer. She hadn’t expected it to feel so real. For a moment, it was just the two of them standing close with the moon above, and the night wrapping them in something that felt almost too good to be true.

She opened her mouth to speak again but didn’t get the chance.

The sound of hurried footsteps suddenly echoed from the stairwell below. Heavy, fast, and getting closer. Men. Several of them were heading up.

Keegan turned his head toward the rooftop door, his smile never quite fading. But his eyes sharpened. He stepped slightly away from Grace, not out of fear, but as if he already knew how this moment would end.

Oops,he said with a light, teasing voice, the same way someone might joke about being late for dinner. I guess our time’s being cut short.

Grace blinked as her heart suddenly rose to her throat. Segen, wait-

I have to go now, darling,he said with a grin. And just like that, he moved toward the edge of the rooftop. Grace’s breath caught. What are you-?!

But it was too late. He gave her one last playful wink, then jumped off the edge of the building in a single smooth motion.

Segen!she gasped, rushing forward.

Her feet carried her to the ledge with heart pounding wildly She leaned over, afraid of what she might or might

not see.

Just then, the rooftop door burst open behind her with a loud bang, slamming against the wall. The golden light from inside spilled out into the night, washing away the shadows around her. Shouts followed.

There she is!

Miss Blackwood, are you alright?

Men came running as their eyes scanned her quickly for injuries, their weapons drawn, their faces tense.

But Grace didn’t turn around. She barely registered the rush of footsteps behind her, or the voices calling her name. Her focus was fixed below scanning the shadowed floor of the building.

And then, just in time, she caught a blur of movement. Grace narrowed her eyes, and leaned slightly over the railing.

How did he even get there?she murmured to herself, her heart still beating a little too fast.

Before she could think further, a strong hand grabbed her arm and yanked her back from the ledge.

Grace!Marco’s voice was sharp, strained. He turned her toward him quickly with a tight grip while his eyes began scanning her in panic.

He looked completely shaken, like he had nearly lost something he couldn’t afford to lose.

His hands hovered, unsure whether to hold her or pull back You’re shaking,he muttered under his breath, brushing strands of hair from her face. His fingers were trembling too. Are you okay? Did he hurt you? Did he touch you?His voice cracked with each word, each question sounding more like a plea than an accusation. As if just the thought of someone else laying hands on her burned him alive inside.

Grace blinked up at him, still dazedstill somewhere between the rooftop breeze and the whisper of a name that wasn’t even real. Her lips parted, but the words caught in her throat. She looked like someone who had wandered out of a dream and wasn’t sure if she was ready to wake up

Grace,he pressed, leaning a little closer and more desperate. Talk to me. Please.

Finally, she looked into his eyes and shook her head slowly

No,she said at last, her voice just above a whisper. He didn’t hurt me.

Marco’s shoulders sagged in the smallest, briefest breath of relief.

But then she added, softer than before, He justdanced with me.

Marco’s face twisted like the words had physically struck him. He what?

Grace didn’t flinch. She just looked far away for a moment, and then, againmore gently this time, like she was telling a secret she couldn’t quite believe herself, she said, He danced with me.

And Marco’s world instantly stopped.

He stared at her, mouth parted, his jaw tightening. Not because the words made no sense but because they did. Too much.

You’re saying he snuck into a building, shut down the entire power grid, managed to escape armed mento dance with you?he asked, voice rising with disbelief and bitterness. Are you hearing yourself right now?

Grace didn’t answer. She wasn’t sure she could explain it if she tried. How could she? How could she describe the way that moment had feltlike being seen, really seen, for the first time in years? Like she wasn’t just someone others used or protected because they had to?

She didn’t try to explain. She just said softly again, We danced.

Marco’s fists clenched. Without looking, he turned to the men behind him and snapped, Seal the exits. Lock down the floors. Find him. Now! I want that bastard’s face on the ground before I’m done counting to ten!

His men didn’t hesitate. They immediately scrambled down the stairs, already shouting commands into radios. But Marco’s rage wasn’t done.

He grabbed Grace by the arm with enough force to make her eyes widen, and pulled her toward him.

You let him dance with you?” he hissed with his voice almost trembling in frustration. You let a stranger… some masked lunaticput his hands on you? You know how to fight, Grace! Why didn’t you fight back?!

Grace’s mouth opened, but nothing came. She tried to pull her arm free, but Marco only tightened his grip.

You could’ve kneed him, elbowed him, screamed, something! But noyou danced? His voice cracked.Goddammit, Grace!

He shoved his hand through his hair, his breathing ragged, his entire body trembling with anger.

I thought he hurt you,Marco muttered, more to himself, pacing now. I thought he took you. I was ready to kill him, and you were justwhat? Floating on the rooftop like it was some damn fairytale?

His gaze snapped back to her. Wild. Conftised. Possessive.

What is wrong with you?he demanded. Do you even realize what could’ve happened? What if he had taken you with him? What if he did something to youwhat if he

His words came out like poison on his tongue.

But Grace remained still and silent.

Because she had no answer for him. Not one he’d want to hear.

Marco stepped closer again, lowering his voice but not his fury.

Tell me who he is,he said through clenched teeth. Tell me what he said to you.

The words struck like a knife, as if knowing would make it all make sense or would give him control again. But it didn’t.

Grace’s eyes lifted to meet his. There was no fear in them. No guilt. Only something softer, sadder, and worse. That softness he thought she would only give to him.

And in that moment, Marco’s breath caught in his throat as his heart dropped somewhere he couldn’t reach

You’rein love with him?he asked as the words escaped without his permission, and came out like a curse.
