Chapter 136: Committed
Chapter 136: Committed
“You’re thinking too hard,” Keegan suddenly murmured, noticing how still Grace had gone, while her head was resting on his chest. “That’s dangerous.”
She blinked slowly but didn’t lift her gaze. “Hmm?”
“You get all quiet when something’s spinning in that pretty head. What is it?” He replied, nudging her gently with his chin.
Grace didn’t answer right away but eventually, she sighed and pushed herself up just enough to look at him.
“I want to tell you something…”
Keegan sat up immediately hearing the tone in her voice, untangling his arms from her as if bracing for impact. Whatever it was, it mattered. And the slight edge to her voice made his pulse stutter.
He turned to face her completely with one hand reaching for hers as he searched her face.
“Please,” he said quietly, “tell me everything.”
Grace gave a faint laugh, when she saw how much worry had gathered in his expression.
“I…” she started, only to be cut off.
“If you’re planning to leave me,” Keegan said quickly, dead serious despite the ridiculousness of the words, “then it’s a no. Just… no. Please. Have mercy on my poor heart and take me with you.”
Grace blinked, caught off guard.
“I mean it,” he added, already spiraling with one hand dramatically splayed over his chest. “You can run, you can hide, but I will be there…clinging to your pant leg like a sad Victorian ghost.”
She snorted.
“I will haunt you with emotional texts,” he added solemnly. “At odd hours. In poetic verse.”
“You’re ridiculous.”
“I’m in love. It’s basically the same thing.”
That finally pulled a full laugh from her, and she reached out, fingers curling into his.
“I’m just…” Her voice quieted. “…worried.”
Keegan’s smile didn’t falter, but his grip on her hand grew a little ghter.
”
He tilted his head, studying her face as she stared down at the bedsheets, the laugh already gone from her eyes.
“What if one day…” she began, hesitating, her thumb brushing getly over his knuckles. “What it one day I can’t stay? What if I suddenly go away?”
She didn’t look at him when she said it.
She didn’t have to
And Keegan… he knew.
She didn’t know he knew. She didn’t know about the reports he ha read in secret, the nights he spent learning words he never wanted to understand, the Jong silences he sat through after the doctors had left. She didn’t know how many times he had stood outside her door at night, listening to her breathing, counting each inhale like it was a prayer.
But he knew.

Still, he smiled.
“Okay,” he said softly, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her or. “Then I’ll follow you.”
Her head snapped up, startled. “Keegan-”
“To the ends of the world,” he added with a mock–serious nod. “O into space. Or wherever this mysterious ‘away‘ is. I’m very committed. And I travel light. I’ll fit in a carry–on if I have to.”
She gave a weak laugh, but he saw the fear flickering at the edges of her smile.
“I’m being serious,” she whispered. “You don’t know what could-”
But Keegan leaned forward and pressed a kiss to her forehead.
“I know,” he murmured. “I know more than you think.”
She froze slightly at the tone but before she could dig into it, he cupped her face in both hands, playful again, but not dismissive. But gentle and loving.
“And I also know,” he continued, “that you’re not allowed to carry this alone. Not when you have me. Not when I’ve spent the past ten minutes proving I’m excellent boyfriend material. Honestly, I think I’m severely underpaid for how good I am at this.”
Grace blinked. “You’re not paid at all.”
“Exactly,” he said with a tragic expression. “It’s emotional labor. demand cuddles as compensation.”
Despite herself, she smiled again. Her eyes glistened, but the weight on her chest began to ease even just a little.
“You’re impossible,” she whispered.
“No,” he whispered back, nuzzling her nose, “I’m yours.”
She looked away quickly like she needed to hold herself together, but he wasn’t done yet. He tightened his arms around her and lay back against the pillows, pulling her on top of him again like he was grounding her to the moment.
“You don’t have to say it,” he murmured, voice muffled against her hair. “Not if you’re not ready. But I’ve got you. Always.”
Keegan ran his fingers slowly and gently along her back, it was almost ticklish. “What if one day I wake up and you’re not beside me?” he said, echoing her words with a teasing glint. “I’d probably have a meltdown. Throw toast. Ruin everyone’s morning.”
She huffed a quiet laugh into his chest. “I’m trying to be serious.”
“And I’m trying to keep you happy,” he whispered. “So let me be ridiculous. Let me love you the way I do.”
Grace bit her lower lip and said nothing.
So he just held her tighter.
Keegan shifted beneath her just enough to look down at her face, ill tucked against his chest. “You know,” he said thoughtfully, “sometimes I’d lie awake at night wondering how to scam you into loving me.”
Grace instantly looked up with brows furrowed. “What?”
He nodded, completely serious but actually trying his best to keeper mind from wandering somewhere else. “I mean, come on. You’re brilliant, stunning, mysterious. I’m just a man with a six–pack, a soft spot for drama, and let’s be honest, a highly questionable robe collection”
Her lips twitched and turned into a smile. “You also have an ego ll size of a continent
“Exactly. A dangerous combination. And yet here you are Cuddling me like I’m not one missed shower away from smelling like desperation and cinnamon tea”
She laughed, hiding her face again, but he gently pulled her back he could keep looking at her.

“I think about it sometimes, Grace,” he said, brushing his thumb over her cheekbone. “Like… if I were your husband, would I be good enough?”
She stilled a little in his arms hearing those words for the first time
“Would I know how to care for you the way you deserve?” he went on softly. “Would I be strong enough to hold you through everything, even when you’re not ready to say what’s hurting? Would I be patient? Gentle? Would I-”
“You already are,” she whispered looking at him in a reassuring way and it was enough for him to know he successfully pulled her out of her own thoughts.
He blinked. “Oh. Cool. Just checking.”
She laughed again and pressed her forehead to his. “You’re ridiculous.”
“I’m devoted,” he said, dramatically lifting one arm like he was about to swear an oath. “Ridiculously devoted. Which is technically better than rich. Although I’m also rich, so… bonus.”
“You’re such an idiot.”
“And yet, here you are. In bed with the idiot.”
She smiled with eyes glistening again, but her hands held onto him tighter.
“I don’t know what tomorrow will look like, Keegan,” she murmured.
“I do,” he said, brushing her hair back. “It looks like us. Even if it’s messy. Even if it’s hard. You’ll still be my woman. And I’ll still be your idiot.”
She snorted.
He grinned. “A husband–worthy idiot, though. I’m deeply committed. So I hope one day… you’ll trust me fully and tell me what’s troubling you… ‘cause I’ll be here ready to give my life for your sake…”
