Grace stood barefoot in the grand doorway, practically drowning in one of Keegan’s buttonup shirts with his robe awkwardly layered over it like some fancy armor. The sleeves hung way past her hands, brushing her knees every time she moved. Her hair was sleepmussed, and her eyes were still halflidded like her bra hadn’t quite caught up with her body.

Keegan was already a few steps down the front staircase before he urned around to have a glance at her who was there blankly blinking, very much not dressed for the occasion.

You sure you’ll be okay?” he called up.

Grace blinked once and responded. You’re going to be late.

That’s not a yes.

I’ll be okay, she repeated, this time with a little shrug that made the robe slip off one shoulder.

He squinted at her suspiciously. That’s your probably not but I don’t want to talk about itvoice.

No, it’s my please go do important richpeople things and don’t over like a worried mother duckvoice.

I’ve never hovered in my life,he said, as if offended.

You literally tried to assign me fiftyeight bodyguards yesterday.

That was strategy, not hovering.

She raised a brow.

Fine. Hovering with flair.

Grace chuckled softly and gave a sleepy little shrug again, as if to say, go already, but the robe just kept slipping. She grabbed the collar and hiked it up again, still watching him.

Keegan stayed where he was a moment longer, halfway between duty and the door with hands on his hips like he was still deciding.

You’re not going to vanish the second I turn around, are you?

Where would I go?she asked, gesturing vaguely at the sky. I don’t even have shoes.

You’re crafty, Barefoot doesn’t slow you down.

She rolled her eyes. Just go.

Keegan sighed, not entirely convinced, but he gave her a soft smile before slipping into the car. The moment the door shut, XV turned on the engine and began driving slowly down the long estate driveway.

Grace stepped down the front steps, her fingers curled loosely around the ends of her sleeves. She watched the car pull away like someone trying to follow the plot of a movie they didn’t quite understand but wanted to. Still, she raised her hand and waved goodbye anyway.

Keegan caught it through the tinted window which made him blin and narrow his eyes in realization.

xy.

Xy glanced at him through the mirror somehow nervous at the tone in his voice Sit?

Stop the car.

The brakes immediately hissed as the car slowed to a halt halfway down the drive

Seeing the car suddenly pull to a stop, Grace squinted in confusion

But then the door flung open and out came Keegan running back with a worried look on his face.

Waitwhat’s wrong?!

Xy!she called out, alarmed, seeing Xy stepping out of the car as well. Is something wrong?! Did he forget something?!But Xy merely shrugged.

What happened? She asked rushing down the steps as soon as Kegan reached her.

You happened.he declared dramatically. I

Before she could say something more, he suddenly swept her off her feet like a knight rescuing a maiden from a nonexistent dragon.

Keegan!she gasped clearly startled and held on to him for her dear life.

You were just gonna let me drive off with that weak little hand wiggle?he accused.

I waved!she squeaked.

That wasn’t a wave, sweetheart. That was a cry for help disguised as polite dismissal!

She blinked, utterly baffled. I thought that’s what people do?

That is what acquaintances do. Neighbors. Former classmates who run into each other at a farmer’s market. Not whatever unhinged, romantic madness we’ve got going on here.

He spun her once more and lowered her back down gently like she was spun sugar. His hands stayed at her waist, his eyes far too serious for a man who’d just staged a fullon departure intervention.

I don’t understandshe whispered, still flustered.

You’re supposed to cling,he explained matteroffactly. You’re supposed to dramatically beg me not to go. Perhaps faint a little. Ideally, cry softly as the wind carries my name.

You’re ridiculous.

Wrong I’m neglected. I’m abandoned. I got in the car with zero kisses and only one lackluster wave. That’s emotional starvation, darling.

I didn’t know, she said, genuinely distressed. No one ever told me there were rules-

He gasped, utterly scandalized. because there aren’t any rules, my love. I just want to be pampered by you and only you.

Stop itshe said, half laughing, half embarrassed. I only ever loved once. And it wasn’t like this.

Keegan’s whole demeanor softened. His hands moved from her wast to her cheeks, holding her like he was trying to rewrite history through touch alone.

Well, prepare to be loved by me,he whispered, leaning close. Ludly. Dramatically. Possibly with confetti.

Before she could reply, he kissed her, slow and smiling and far to thorough for a man allegedly in a hurry.

When he finally pulled back, she blinked up at him, dazed

Still not enough,he muttered But I have to go.

Do you really?

He groaned You see? This is why I wanted the fainting

I can try?

Don’t tempt me. I’ll call off work.

You’re going to be late.

I’ll lie,Keegan said without missing a beat. Say I got kidnapped by my tiny, adorable menace of a girlfriend.

Grace’s cheeks flushed instantly. You’re awful.

I’m in love,he declared proudly, spreading his arms and giving her an exaggerated bow like some hopeless romantic jester. It makes men weird. Some build shrines. I skip work.

Grace bit her lip to keep from grinning. Okaybye, then.

Keegan gasped like she’d just slapped him with a glove in the middle of a ballroom duel. He clutched his chest with mock

betrayal.

Didn’t I just say I wanted to be pampered?he asked. Not even a kiss? A farewell poem?

She blinked at him.

Throw yourself at me. Demand I never leave your side again. Maybe start weeping dramaticallyjust a little. Two tears minimum.

Grace squinted. Should I also scream don’t go!into the wind?

Exactly,he nodded. Now you’re getting it.

She gave him a dry look. You’re the menace.

Hmm.He agreed.

She sighed, mostly just to humor him. Keegan.

Yes, my heart?

You should go.

Keegan pouted. Fine. But I’ll have you know that in my head, you’re crying at the gates and swearing eternal love while doves fly overhead.

She rolled her eyes, finally smiling. Take your doves and go.

And so Keegan turned with a heavy heart, took one step toward the car-

Then darted back and kissed her forehead.

Bye properly,he said, and finally gave her one last look, utterly snitten, before finally walking back to the car. He didn’t even look at Xy as he got in.

Not a word,he warned him.

I would never,Xy said, deadpan, as he closed the door behind him.
