Chapter 35: Silhouette

Chapter 35: Silhouette

While Valerian was deep in thought, Mrs. Ellis suddenly reached into her dress pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. She then handed it to him with a sigh.

I was cleaning her room earlier today and found this, she said. young man came by yesterday and asked me to give it to Noelle. I did, after you left.

Valerian’s fingers tightened around the note as he listened.

She acted different after that,Mrs. Ellis continued. Didn’t say much, but I could see it in her eyes. What was written in that letteris the reason why she left.(1)

As Valerian unfolded the paper, he gritted his teeth in anger.

Adrian. He came here earlier today as well looking for her. He was thathandsome actor. What was his last name again?the old woman paused and thought for a while until she finally got it.

Ah! Blackwood! Adrian Blackwood. Yes, that is the name. She continued.

The moment Blackwood left her lips, something inside him had snapped.

Valerian didn’t just know the name. He remembered it.

There is no way he does not know such infamous family name. The Blackwood organization was known to traffic wo girls in the underworld and nobody had any say about it. But Valerian had already put an end to it by eliminating the re

Valerian chuckled to himself while he shook his head. He has been too lenient. He should have wiped them all out. Now, one of them wishes to take what was his.

Without another word, Valerian turned on his heel and walked out of the building. But before he turned to head to his car, he stopped on his tracks and slightly glanced to the direction of his henchman.

Call Katya.

The henchman didn’t hesitate. With a sharp nod, he immediately pulled out his phone.

Valerian didn’t wait for a response and headed to his car. He had no doubt the call would go through. If Blackwood thinks he was as powerful as before, he was wrong.

Meanwhile, Noelle had gotten off the bus before she could even arrive to her next destination as the overwhelming nausea twisted her insides. She stumbled away from the small station, barely having the strength to keep herself upright as she rushed toward the nearest tree. Her knees nearly buckled beneath her as she gripped the rough bark for support. Her stomach lurched violently, and before she could stop it, she vomited. 1

Her whole body trembled while her breaths came in sharp, uneven gasps. Her fingers dug into the bark as if clinging to it would keep her from falling apart completely.

But it didn’t.

She felt sick.

Not just from the physical toll of her fear but from the sheer helplessness pressing down on her chest.

She should have been angry.

She should have been screaming, throwing every ounce of hurt and betrayal back at him.

But instead

She was here. Shaking. Vomiting. Struggling to breathe through the burden of everything crashing down on her all over again.

Adrian Blackwood.

Even thinking his name sent ice through her veins.

Noelle pressed her forehead against the tree trunk. Her skin stung from the rough bark, but she didn’t care. She needed something to ground her and something to keep her from breaking apart completely.

Why?

Why was he looking for her now?

What did he want?

She had left. She had disappeared. She had cut herself out of his life entirely and gave up everything just to find some semblance of peace.

And still, he was chasing her.

Was it not enough?

Had it not been enough for him to ruin her, to reduce her to nothing?

She thought the pain had ended the day she walked away. She had begged herself to believe that the worst was behind her.

But the truth was, the worst kind of pain wasn’t the one that came from losing someone. It was realizing that you never truly had them to begin with. Because if Adrian had loved her, if he had truly loved herHe wouldn’t have looked at Bianca the

did. He wouldn’t have made Noelle feel like a fool for believing in something that was never hers to hold.

A choked sob escaped her throat before she could stop it.

The

She squeezed her eyes shut while pressing her hand over her mouth as if that would somehow keep the grief from spilling out, but it was useless. The tears came anyway, hot and relentless, slipping down her cheeks as she pressed herself harder against the tree.

She had been nothing more than a bottle of medicine. Something he needed to consume until he healed enough to return to the woman he had always wanted, leaving her empty by the end of it all.

And now?

Now he had the audacity to chase her? For what? Hadn’t he already taken everything from her?

Hadn’t he broken her enough?

Noelle let out a shaky breath, but it hitched in her throat as it broke into another sob. Her shoulders trembled while her hands

clenched into fists at her sides.

She wanted to disappear.

She wanted to fade into nothing so that he would never find her again.

But no matter how tightly she curled in on herself

No matter how far she ran

She knew there was no escaping Adrian Blackwood. It would be better to just face him now than run all her life and hide in fear.

Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through her stomach that cut through the haze of her thoughts.

Hngh-!Noelle gasped while her fingers instinctively clutched at her abdomen as a dull ache spread through her body.

She staggered slightly but tried her best to remain standing. She had been in pain for a while now, ever since that suffocating

pharmacy and luckily found one by the road a few blocks away.

Noelle staggered slightly but forced herself to stay upright. The path throbbed deep in her stomach, but she clenched her jaw and refused to let it bring her to her knees.

This must be just the motion sicknessshe told herself, inhaling shakily. Just breathe. It’ll pass.

She wiped the cold sweat from her forehead and glanced around, searching for anything that could help. Until her eyes landed on a small pharmacy tucked between two buildings a few blocks away.

Perfect.

She exhaled in relief and pushed herself forward. But each step felt heavier than the last. The world around her felt distant, like she was walking through water.

Her vision was starting to get blurry, yet she tried her best to squint her eyes to see what was up ahead.

Just a few more steps, she mumbled with her voice barely above a whisper. I just need medicinethen I can figure out what to do next.

But her body betrayed her.

Her legs trembled violently before giving out beneath her. Then, a wave of exhaustion crashed over her that drowned her

senses: And the last thing she saw was the silhouette of a familiar man, sprinting toward her as he screamed her name in panic, before everything went black. 1
