Noelle’s fingers twitched as she tried to move. But she could feel something holding her back. Panic bubbled up in her throat at the feeling of being restrained, but just as quickly as it came, it faded when she noticed she wasn’t alone.
Slumped in a chair beside her bed was Valerian.
His arms were crossed, his head tilted slightly forward, and his dark hair were falling over his forehead. Even in sleep, he looked tense, like his body was on high alert. But the sight of him made a strange warmth spread through her chest.
She was relieved knowing she was free from Adrian.
A shaky breath left her lips. Her gaze lingered on him for a moment before she slowly lifted her hand, reaching toward him. It was the smallest movement, barely anything at all, but it was enough to wake him up.
Valerian’s silver–grey eyes snapped open, sharp and alert in an instant. The moment he saw her awake he immediately leaned forward and began checking on her.
“Noelle,” he began. “How do you feel?”
She blinked weakly as if the simple act took effort. A faint smile graced her lips, weak but unmistakably warm.
“Good…” She softly answered. She swallowed before murmuring, “Where… am I?”
Valerian breathed in relief but frustration was undeniable in his eyes. She was awake, but the sight of her so frail made his jaw clench.
And so, he didn’t waste another second. Without taking his eyes off her, he reached for the nearest intercom and barked a single order.
“Get the doctor. Now.”
Noelle watched him, though exhaustion made it hard to keep her eyes open.
Within seconds, footsteps echoed outside before the door opened. A man in a black dress shirt and pants, wearing eyeglasses with a stethoscope around his neck, stepped inside. A nurse, dressed similarly, followed close behind with a medical kit in hand.
“Can you tell me your name?” he asked as he checked her vitals, flashing a light in her eyes.
“U–uhm… Noelle… McGrath.” she answered.
“Hello Noelle I’m James, how are you feeling? Do you feel any pain?”
Noelle took a slow breath, feeling the lingering ache in her chest. The dull throb made it hard to breathe too deeply, but compared to what she had expected, the pain was bearable.
“A little sore…” she admitted, her voice hoarse, “But… I can manage.”
Dr. James nodded as he gently pressed along her ribs, carefully assessing her condition. “You were lucky. The bullet grazed your left lung, but it didn’t cause severe damage. We removed it, and you’ve been stable since the. surgery.”
She swallowed as her fingers twitched against the sheets. Shot. The memory was hazy, but flashes of it crept into her mind–pain, cold air, Valerian’s voice calling her name

Dr. James continued in a steady tone. “You may feel shortness of breath or discomfort when moving too much, but with rest, you’ll recover well.” He glanced at Valerian. “Shell need to avoid any strain for the next few weeks to avoid stressing herself and the baby.”
At the doctor’s words, silence instantly crashed over the room.
Noelle’s breath hitched and her body stiffened against the pillows. Her wide eyes were locked on the doctor as if she had misheard him.
Valerian, who had been sitting rigidly beside her, abruptly stood. The chair scraped against the floor, causing a sharp sound in the peaceful space. His silver–grey eyes darkened as he fixed his gaze on Dr. James.
The doctor, oblivious to the tension now suffocating the room, simply turned on his heel, ready to leave.
But Valerian wasn’t done.
“Wait.”
Dr. James stopped mid–step, looking back with a calm, professional expression.
Noelle who was still frozen, finally found her voice, though it was barely above a whisper.
“…What did you just say?”
Dr. James blinked at their reactions, his calm demeanor faltering as he took in the evident shock on both their faces. He glanced between them, then turned his attention to Noelle as his brows slightly furrowed.
“You… did know you were pregnant?”
Noelle’s lips parted, but no sound came out. Her mind spun as the doctor’s words kept repeating in her head, but they refused to make sense.
Pregnant? That couldn’t be right. That had to be a mistake.
Her hands trembled as they moved instinctively to her abdomen, pressing lightly over the fabric of her gown. She felt no difference, no sign that anything had changed. But three months… three months meant–1
Her stomach dropped.
“No,” she whispered. “I–I didn’t know…”
Valerian remained silent beside her, but the tension radiating from him was suffocating. His jaw was clenched tight while his eyes locked onto her.
Dr. James exhaled, rubbing the bridge of his nose as realization settled in. “I see.” He kept his tone even, though there was a slight hesitation now. “You’re about twelve weeks along. That explains why you’re feeling fatigued. We confirmed it during surgery, but since the baby is stable we didn’t need to intervene.”
Noelle’s breath came unevenly. Three months. Her mind raced through the timeline, trying to piece everything -together.
“And you’re certain?” Valerian suddenly asked.
Dr. James met his gaze and nodded. “Yes. There’s no doubt.
Silence stretched between them.
Noelle’s pulse pounded in her ears. She could feel Valerian’s stare on her, heavy and unwavering, but she couldn’t bring herself to meet his eyes.

Because her mind was elsewhere trapped in the past twelve weeks, replaying every moment she had spent with Adrian before she left him.
Her last night in his arms. His touch, his whispers, the way he had held her like she was his entire world.
A wave of nausea rolled through her, but it wasn’t from the pregnancy. It was from the realization settling like a stone in her chest.
If she was three months along….
Then the father of her child… was Adrian. 1
The realization sucked out all of her strength as she trembled.
Her fingers curled into the sheets, gripping them as if they could anchor her against the storm raging inside her. Her breath came in shallow, uneven pulls, and no matter how much she tried to steady herself, the weight of the truth crushed her.
Adrian’s child.
Her lips parted, but no words came.
Back then, news like this would have filled her with joy. It would have meant a future, a family–everything she once dreamed of.
But now?
Now, it terrified her.
