Chapter 94: Rest

Dr. Everett exhaled heavily, setting down his medical bag. I’ll need space to work. Step aside, Mr. DeLuca.

Marco didn’t move. He didn’t even acknowledge the request. His eyes remained fixed on Grace, as if willing her to wake up just by holding her hand.

The doctor sighed, already expecting this kind of resistance. Marco,he tried again, gentler this time, let me do my job. She needs treatment,

Still, Marco refused to budge. His grip on Grace’s hand tightened, his jaw clenching. I’m not leaving. His voice was low as if warning him.

Dr. Everett raised a brow, unimpressed. You staying here won’t change anything. If anything, you’ll only get in the way.Marco’s gaze snapped up, his dark eyes burning with frustration. If you think I’m just going to stand outside while she-She already made that decision for you,the doctor interrupted smoothly, leveling him with a knowing look

Marco froze.

Dr. Everett shook his head as he began preparing his instruments. Grace instructed me a long time ago that when she’s being treated, she doesn’t want anyone in the room. Not you. Not her men. No one.

The doctor didn’t wait for a response as he turned toward Marco with a firm stare. You can’t be here. And if you really care about her, you’ll respect that.

For a long moment, Marco just sat there, his grip still firm around Grace’s hand. His throat tightened, and for once, he didn’t know what to say.

But then, with a sharp breath, he finally let go.

He stood up stiffly, his movements reluctant as his eyes lingered on her for a second too long before he finally turned and walked out, closing the door shut behind him.

Dr. Everett sighed as the door clicked shut. He knew the man had left reluctantly, and for good reason. But right now, Grace needed to be checked, and there was no time to dwell on emotions.

With steady hands, he reached for the collar of her jacket and gently peeled it away.

But the sight beneath made his eyes widen in shock.

Bruises v

cattered on her skin from her chest down to her arms. He then lifted his shirt up to see her stomach only to wound and some bruises beginning to darken.

They were not the fresh ones that marred her face from the recent beating, but dark, sickly ones blooming along her arms and

shoulders.

Oh, GraceHis voice came out in a quiet murmur, more to himself than to her. His fingers lightly traced over the discoloration on her skin, his brows knitting together in concern.

You’re seriously getting worsehe muttered under his breath.

And as if on cue, she stirred.

A soft, pained whimper left her lips as her brows furrowed, her lashes fluttering weakly.

Dr. Everett quickly pulled the blanket over her again, schooling his features as she began to wake.

Grace?he called gently.

Her eyes opened sluggishly, unfocused for a moment before they ally landed on him. She blinked as confusion clouded her

gaze.

Doctor? Her voice was hoarse and barely above a whisper.

Dr. Everett forced a small smile, though his heart ached at the sight of her.

I’m here,he assured. Just rest for now.

But Grace, even in her weakened state, managed to force a tired smirk and sat up.

You’re fussing again, she murmured. Did Marco leave?

Dr. Everett exhaled, shaking his head.

That man nearly threatened my life to stay, but I told him you didn’t want anyone else here during treatment.

A breathy chuckle escaped her lips. Good.

But just as quickly as the amusement came, it faded. Dr. Everett saw the brief flicker of pain in her eyes and the exhaustion that weighed down her body. And despite everything, despite the years of keeping professional distance, he found himself reaching for her hand, squeezing it gently.

Grace.he said quietly.

She hummed in acknowledgment, her gaze slipping over to him, but her eyes were distant, clouded with something that he couldn’t quite read.

How long do I have left?she asked softly in a resigned and calm tone.

He didn’t know how to respond to those words. The question seemed too heavy to bear. His stomach twisted, but he kept his mouth shut, unsure of what he could possibly say to the woman whom he had treated as his own daughter.

Meanwhile, Marco stood stiffly in the hallway. Impatience gnawed at him as he waited by the door to Grace’s room. The seconds stretched into what felt like hours for him.

What was taking so long? Why hadn’t the doctor come out yet?

His thoughts spiraled in circles when the door suddenly clicked open, snapping his attention back to the present.

How long has it been?Marco thought, his brow furrowing in confusion. It hasn’t even been fifteen minutes. What could they have talked about?

He turned to face the doctor, only to be caught off guard by what he saw.

Grace wstanding there, already up and moving as she followed Dr. Everett out of the room. She looked fragile, like she might collapse at any moment, but still, there she was walking.

Marco’s heart skipped a beat, and he quickly moved to block her path out of concern.

Where are you going?he asked, his eyes darting between Grace and Dr. Everett, silently pleading for the doctor to stop her.

But Grace did not look at him and answered quickly.

I’m going to see

him,she finished. The word barely escaped her lips as if it tasted bitter on her tongue.

You’re in no condition to move,he said firmly, stepping closer with his frustration bleeding into his voice.

Grace exhaled heavily, as if tired of the argument before it even began. Then, finally, she looked at him.

Then help me,she sighed.

Marco stared at her, his frustration warring with the undeniable fact that she was too damn stubborn to listen. He could tell she was barely holding herself together. Her skin was still too pale, and her body was weak.

Dr. Everett, who had remained silent until now, finally spoke up, adjusting his glasses with a weary sigh.

She shouldn’t be moving, the doctor stated, echoing Marco’s concerns. She needs to rest-

I don’t have time to rest,Grace cut in, her tone sharp despite the exhaustion laced within it. She turned to Marco again, her gaze steady. Are you going to help me or not?”

His hands curled into fists at his sides. Damn her. Damn her stubbornness, her recklessness.

And damn himself for knowing that no matter how much he wanted to fight her on this, he would give in anyway.

Without another word, Marco stepped forward. In one swift motion, he slipped an arm under her legs and another behind her back, lifting her effortlessly into his arms.

Marco-

Shut up,he muttered, adjusting his hold on her. You wanted help, didn’t you?

Grace breathed but didn’t argue, though he didn’t miss the way she subtly leaned into him.

Dr. Everett sighed once more, shaking his head. At least let her get all the rest she needs when you return,he muttered, knowing full well that he wouldn’t be able to stop her.

Marco ignored him and went ahead to where she wanted to be.

Let’s get this over with.he grumbled.
