“Are you tired?” She asked as they stepped out into the cool evening air. She had kept the timing tight so that, when the moment came, she could steer him toward Alinova for the final part of her plan.
“Not yet,” Lucian said. He looked at her with that same quiet question she’d felt all day. “You’ve been planning this thoroughly.”
Alina tilted her head, delighted and a little anxious. “I wanted today to be… for you. One day where you didn’t have to think about anything but enjoying it.” She reached up and smoothed the edge of his collar. “There’s just one more stop.”
They arrived at Alinova as dusk fell. The boutique’s interior glowed warm and intimate. Alina led him through the familiar racks to a private dressing alcove she’d readied.
She stepped aside and revealed the suit, midnight blue cut in Lucian’s precise tailoring, the fabric catching the light like water. Tiny, tasteful diamonds were set along the lapel and cuff in a pattern that caught the eye without screaming for attention.
Beside it, on a mannequin, hung a dress that matched, deep midnight blue sequins and a silhouette that echoed the suit’s quiet refinement.
Lucian’s breath hitched. He stepped forward, running a fingertip over the lapel as if to confirm it was real. “Midnight blue,” he said softly, incredulous. “With diamonds.” He looked at Alina, a corner of his mouth lifting. “You did this?”
She nodded, cheeks warming. “I designed it for you. I wanted something that felt like you but different, something to mark the day.”
He held the suit up and turned it, inspecting the line and finish. He is a man who favored black always, a fact she knew. Now, however, his eyes softened, caught. “I don’t usually wear colour,” he admitted, voice low. “But this… this actually is perfect.” He looked at her, admiration plain in his face. “It suits my aesthetic too.”
Alina’s chest fluttered, she had planned every stitch with that risk in mind. “Good,” she breathed. “Try it on. I’ll wait.”
While he disappeared behind the curtain, Alina began to change into her dress too. Just as she finished getting ready, a soft ping buzzed on Alina’s phone. She glanced down.
It was a message from Maya.
‘Ballroom is ready. Guests assembled and waiting. All set.’
Alina’s smile widened. She typed back quickly.
‘On our way.‘
When Lucian reappeared in the suit, the fabric moving perfectly with him, she felt the whole day snap into place as nerves and relief braided into one bright, trembling thread.

He moved deliberately toward her, his expression was both surprised and pleased.

“You look incredible.” He said, voice thick with something like pride. He stepped closer, and for a moment the world narrowed to the two of them, the midnight blue a private joke and a secret she’d kept.
Alina’s phone buzzed again, she glanced at the screen, then looked up with a small, composed smile. “We have to pop by the house for one thing before dinner,” she said lightly. “Just a quick stop.”
Lucian’s brow wrinkled, but he didn’t press. “Okay,” he said, settling back into an easy calm. “Let’s go then, we’ll be ready to go to dinner when you are.”
She kissed his cheek, trying to hide the quick beat of adrenaline that fluttered through her. “We’ll be very quick. Promise.”
He nodded and took her hand, unaware of how close the surprise now was to unfolding.
The drive back to the mansion was a quiet one, the city lights gliding past in a blur. Alina’s hands fidgeted in her lap, a small tremor in her fingers she tried hard to swallow.
Lucian kept stealing looks at her, at the way the midnight blue caught the light, at the soft curve of her lips and something like gratitude softened his features.
He reached towards her, covering her hand with his. He noticed that her fingers were warm and shaking.
“You okay?” He asked, thumb brushing the trembling.
She drew a breath and met his eyes. “Yes. I… I’m just nervous about dinner.” Her smile wavered into something more genuine. “It’s silly. We’ve spent the whole day together already. It’s not a first date.”
He gave a small, teasing half–smile. “Then don’t be. It’s just us.”
“Okay,” she said, letting his reassurance settle over her. “I’ll be fine.”
Inside the mansion, she paused at his side. From her bag she drew a slim blindfold, a midnight blue, the shade of his suit, and held it up. Lucian blinked, curious.
“What are you doing?” He asked.
“One more surprise,” she answered, voice soft. “Trust me.”
He hesitated a heartbeat, then let her tie the silky band over his eyes. The world narrowed into darkness but he could still perceive the faint scent of roses still clinging to her.
She took his hand and guided him through the corridor, her steps sure and steady as she led him toward the west wing, not through the garden doors but the service entrance from inside the house.
