Chapter 202
AUTHOR’S POV.
And right on cue, a voice sounded behind them, deep and teasing. “Did somebody say my name?”
Both women turned, and there was Damien, a smirk playing at his lips as if he’d been waiting for the perfect moment to make his entrance.
Alina couldn’t help but laugh at Damien’s perfectly timed entrance. “Hi, Damien. Yes, we did say your name. She was just wondering why she wasn’t the one helping me pick a gift for Lucian, so I told her you did.”
Turning with a graceful smile, she gestured between them. “Damien, this is my best friend, Talia Hart. Talia, this is Damien Evergreen, Lucian’s newest business partner.”
Damien inclined his head politely, his smile smooth. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Miss Hart.”
“The pleasure is all mine and please, Talia is fine.” Talia said with a bright smile.
“I will keep that in mind.” Damien chuckled.
Alina leaned slightly toward him, her eyes searching. “So, the deal is sealed now, yeah?”
“Yeah,” Damien confirmed with a brief nod. “It’s a sealed deal now.”
His gaze flicked over the crowd before settling back on Alina. “Where’s Mr. Blackwood? I just came in.”
Alina gestured across the ballroom, where Lucian stood in quiet conversation with another guest. “He’s right over there.”
“Perfect.” Damien gave both women an easy smile. “Well, it was lovely seeing you ladies. You loc‘ stunning tonight by the way, but I have to run.” With that, he offered a brief nod and slipped away into th crowd.
The moment he was gone, Talia’s lips curved into a mischievous grin. “Damn. He’s hot.”
Alina wrinkled her nose, making a face. “Ew.”
“What do you mean, ew?” Talia shot back, eyebrows raised. “It’s not like he’s your brother or something. If there’s an attraction, I wouldn’t even blame you.”
Alina gave her a flat, incredulous look. “Really? I thought you were team Lucian.”
“Of course I am, team Lucian all day, every day,” Talia said quickly, her grin widening. “I’m just saying… that man is fine as hell.”
Before Alina could respond, a low voice cut in behind them. “Who is fine as hell?”
Both women froze. Talia spun around slowly, her smile faltering as she came face–to–face with Ace.
“Uh….I….I was just-” she stammered, her words tangling together.
Ace’s gaze narrowed, his tone calm but edged. “Have I been too lenient with firecracker?”
you,
Talia opened her mouth, but no defense came out. She glanced helplessly at Alina, who lifted her hands in mock surrender. “Well,” Alina said lightly, suppressing a laugh, “I think that’s my cue.”
Talia shot her a glare, eyes widening with a silent traitor accusation.
Alina only laughed softly, shaking her head as she stepped away, leaving Talia to face Ace’s dark stare alone. She slipped back into the crowd, her laughter blending into the hum of the party as she went to mingle with the other guests.
A few minutes later, Alina made her way through the crowd, her eyes immediately finding Lucian. He was still locked in a deep exchange with Damien, his posture composed yet commanding.
Stepping up to them, Alina slipped her hand into Lucian’s arm, her lips curving in a teasing smile. “I think that’s enough hoarding my man for the night.”
Damien turned his head toward her, amusement flickering in his eyes. “My apologies, ma’am.” He said smoothly, the corners of his mouth lifting in a polite smile.
Alina shifted her gaze to Lucian, her tone softening. “Are you ready for your second–to–last gift of the day?”
Lucian’s steel–gray eyes lingered on her, unreadable, before he finally gave a short nod. “Lead the way.”
Before moving, Lucian turned to Damien, offering him a firm nod, a silent acknowledgment, before letting Alina guide him out of the conversation.
