AUTHOR’S POV.
Damien froze for half a second, but because Alina’s back was to him, she didn’t notice. His face was unreadable as he spoke. “With all due respect, miss… who are you?”
Seraphina’s eyes widened, her pride wounded. “Excuse me?” She drew herself up straighter, voice dripping with entitlement. “Seraphina Dawn,” she announced, as though the name itself should command respect. “I’m Alina’s sister.”
Damien tilted his head slightly, eyes narrowing with feigned thought. “Hmm. Okay.” His tone was neutral, giving nothing away.
Before Seraphina could spit out another word, Alina stepped forward, her patience thinning. “Why are you here, Serafina?”
Seraphina pressed a hand dramatically to her chest. “Sis, I’m just worried about you. suspicious that this man is always around you?”
Don’t you
find it
Alina’s lips pressed into a thin line. She knew Seraphina wasn’t speaking out of concern, only spite. Her tone sharpened. “This is none of your business. Damien is my client, and I will not sit here and let you disrespect him.”
“Your client?” Seraphina scoffed. “Since when? Don’t you think all of this is just a little bit-”
“That’s enough!” Alina snapped, turning sharply to the security guards. “Get her out of here.”
The guards moved in immediately. Serafina struggled against them, her shrill voice filling the boutique. “You’ll regret this, Alina! You’ll regret siding with him over your own blood!” Her insults and profanities echoed even as the guards dragged her outside, heels clicking furiously against the floor.
The tension lingered in the air after she was gone. Alina turned back to Damien, her face sofening with regret. “I’m so sorry you had to witness that.”
Damien shook his head, his voice calm and almost too collected. “It’s fine. Don’t worry about it.”
Alina let out a breath. “So… is that the last of everything? Any adjustments you’d want me to make?”
Damien gave a small, approving nod. “No. They’re looking good. You can proceed with the next set.”
“Perfect.” Alina said, a faint smile breaking through.
As Damien turned to leave, his phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, then looked back at Alina. “I have to take this.”
She nodded. “Of course.”
He stepped outside, moving to a quiet corner, but instead of answering immediately, he waited until he was out of sight. Finally, he pressed the phone to his ear.
A cold voice came through the line. “What’s the progress?”
Damien exhaled, running a hand over his jaw. “Still nothing yet. I was close, but, there are eyes on me now.”
“Who?”
“Her adopted sister,” he muttered. “She’s beginning to suspect me. But luckily, Alina doesn’t take her seriously.”
“Good. But you need to be careful,” the voice warned. “Don’t get caught before you secure the sample.”
Damien’s tone hardened. “I understand. Next time, I’ll make sure I get it.”
“See that you do.” The voice clipped before the line went dead.
Damien lowered the phone slowly, jaw tightening as frustration burned behind his eyes.
Later that day, Alina sat back on the plush sofa in Talia’s sitting room, her arms folded tightly across her chest, irritation still lingering on her face. “You should have seen her, Talia. The audacity of that girl, coming to my place of work, creating a whole scene, talking about how she cares about me and she’s worried. Since when has Seraphina ever cared about anybody other than herself?”
Talia’s lips curved into a sharp smirk, her eyes gleaming with mischief. “The nerve of that girl. Honestly, I want an opportunity to get my hands on her. Her life will never remain the same after that.”
Alina chuckled, though the sound was tinged with exasperation. “I know, right? She stood there acting like some guardian angel. Dramatic as always. Sometimes I wonder if she truly believes her own lies.”
Talia leaned forward, resting her chin on her palm. “Hmm. But don’t you think she has a point?”
Alina blinked, narrowing her eyes. “What do you mean?”
“I mean Damien,” Talia said slowly, her tone thoughtful. “Him showing up at places you are… I don’t know, Lina, I find it a little suspicious.”
Alina let out a groan, dragging her hand down her face. “Not you too, Talia. I told you, it was a coincidence. Besides, the only reason he’s been around me is because I’m designing some outfits for him.”
Talia tilted her head, unconvinced. “I understand, but still. He could have walked into any boutique, ordered, and gotten his suits. Why does he have to come to you? You’re the fiancée of his business partner. He has no business being this close.”
Alina lifted her brows and gave a little shrug. “Well, maybe he’s trying to support my business, help it grow. I mean, that’s the way I see it.”
Talia gave her a look, lips pursed.
Alina pointed a playful finger at her. “Talia, please. Don’t let Seraphina get into
into your
your head.”
Talia raised her hands in mock surrender. “Okay, fine. I was just thinking.”
“Then stop thinking.” Alina teased, rolling her eyes, though there was a smile tugging at her lips.
To shift the conversation, she leaned in. “So… how’s work going? The hunt for Jessica and that unknown man?”
At the mention, Talia’s playfulness dimmed, her expression hardening with focus. “We keep catching Jessica’s radar, but just as quickly as it appears, it disappears. Someone’s hiding her and doing a damn good job. It’s like playing mouse in the hole. Every time we think we’ve got her, she slips away again.”
