AUTHOR’S POV.
Later that evening, Alina and Lucian was having a quiet dinner at home, just the two of them at the long table. Alina sat across from Lucian, cutting into her food when he spoke up casually.
“There’s going to be a dinner party.” Lucian said, his tone as even as if he were mentioning the weather.
“Oh that’s nice.” Alina responded absentmindedly. “What for?”
“It’s for the conclusion of the first phase of the first phase of my project with Damien, the planning phase is done and this is to commemorate that.” Lucian elaborated.
Alina’s head snapped up, her face breaking into a bright smile. “That’s wonderful! Baby, I’m so happy for you. You’ve worked so hard for this, and now it’s being celebrated… I couldn’t be prouder.”
Lucian’s mouth lifted slightly at the corners, the kind of smile he reserved only for her.
“When is it?” She asked, curious and already planning ahead in her mind.
“Saturday.” He replied.
“Oh, next week Saturday?” Relief crossed her face. “That’s perfect. I’ll have enough time to get ready—”
“This weekend.” He corrected smoothly, as if it were no big deal.
Her fork slipped from her fingers, landing against the plate with a sharp clang. “Wait….what? As in three days from now?”
Lucian frowned slightly, confused at her reaction. “Yes. Why are you acting like that’s a problem?”
“Because it is a problem!” Alina groaned, pressing her palm to her forehead. “Lucian, I nee ime. A dress doesn’t magically appear in three days. Hair, shoes, makeup, do you even understand wha goes into this?”
“You don’t have to stress,” he said calmly, leaning back in his chair. “I’ll bring in the best team to help you get ready, even if I have to fly them here. You’ll have everything you need.”
“That’s not the point!” she snapped dramatically, throwing her hands up. “It’s wasteful for one evening!”
Lucian didn’t move, watching as she shoved the last of her food into her mouth and stood abruptly.
“Where are you going?” He asked, one brow raised.
“Calling Talia!” She shouted over her shoulder, already hurrying out of the dining room.
Lucian stared after her, half amused and half confused. He muttered under his breath, “I’ll never understand why women need a month’s warning for a party that lasts one night.”
Upstairs, Alina had already grabbed her phone and flopped onto the bed. She hit call, and Talia picked up
almost immediately.
“Alina? What’s wrong? You sound like you’re about to declare war.”
Alina’s voice was sharp with disbelief. “You will be too if you just found out that there is a party happening three days from now and you are only being informed about it!”
On the other end, Talia gasped, then her tone shifted knowingly. “Wait, is this the dinner party Lucian’s having to celebrate his big project with Damien?”
“Yes!” Alina groaned, throwing herself back on the bed. “You already know about it?”
“I do. Ace told me this afternoon,” Talia admitted, her voice carrying equal parts sympathy and annoyance. “Honestly, men are so clueless sometimes. They had the whole week to say something, but no… they wait until three days before the event. Typical!”
Alina sat up, waving her free hand in exasperation even though Talia couldn’t see her. “I know, right? At least Ace told you earlier today. Me? I only just found out a few minutes ago!”
“Men,” Talia groaned with an exaggerated tone of disappointment, dragging the word out until it made Alina laugh despite herself. “So, what’s the plan? Can you design something for the two of us?”
Alina sighed, her lips pressing into a thin line as she shook her head. “The time is too short. Sure, I could make it happen if I forced my team to work overtime, but they already have too much on their plate right now. It wouldn’t be fair to them.”
“Hmm,” Talia hummed, pretending to think before asking lightly, “So… shopping?”
Alina nodded to herself, resigned. “Yeah. Shopping.”
“When?”
“Tomorrow morning,” Alina answered without missing a beat, her tone sharp and certain, like it should have been obvious from the start.
Talia chuckled, the sound warm and teasing. “Right, of course. Silly me. My bad.” She softened her tone before asking, “Should I meet you at yours, or are you coming to mine?”
“I’ll pick you up.” Alina replied, already making a mental note to leave early.
“Okay then, tomorrow is going to be a long day.” Talia said cheerfully.
“Don’t I know it.” Alina said in a dramatic tone not really liking shopping as much as her friend did.
Takia chuckled at her tone.
They exchanged goodbyes, and as soon as the call ended, Alina let her phone drop onto the covers with a sigh, already dreading the chaos of tomorrow.
Alina woke early, more from adrenaline than sleep. She hurriedly got ready as she moved around the room quietly but apparently not quiet enough because Lucian stirred on the bed, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
