Seraphina froze, her eyes widening. “DNA?” she repeated sharply. “Between Damien and who?”

The nurse glanced around nervously before whispering, “Between Damien Evergreen and a certain… Alina Dawn.”

Seraphina’s blood ran cold. She stumbled back a step, her chest tightening as the name echoed in her mind. Alina Dawn?

Her thoughts spiraled. Is that it? Does Damien think Alina is his sister? Is that why he’s been hovering around her? Not because he’s interested… but because of blood?

Her nails dug into her palm as she struggled to breathe evenly. With a forced calmness, she pulled another sleek card that contained her information from her purse, pressing it into the nurse’s trembling hand.

“When the results are ready, you inform me first. No one else. Do you understand?”

The nurse swallowed hard, nodding quickly. “Y–yes.” She clutched the card before hurrying away.

Seraphina remained rooted in place, her face twisting with bitterness and spite. Alina and Damien… they do share the same color of eyes, she thought, recalling it with a flash of resentment. But that could be a coincidence. It has to be. She’ll just have to wait for the result.

Her lips curled into a sharp sneer, venom dripping from her expression. “If it’s true… then everything changes.”

The next morning, Damien arrived early at the hospital, his pace brisk and his jaw set with determination. He went straight to the nurse’s unit, his voice low but firm.

“I’m here for my result.”

One of the nurses at the desk looked up at him with a polite smile. “Your name, sir?”

“Damien Evergreen.” He replied without hesitation.

She nodded, flipping through the files before pulling out a brown envelope stamped CONFIDENTIAL in bold red letters. “Here you go.”

Damien’s fingers tightened around the envelope as he accepted it. Without waiting another second, he moved to a quiet, secluded corner of the hall, tearing it open with urgency. A single sheet of paper slid out, the stark black letters staring back at him.

His eyes scanned the page once, twice, his breath caught.

“No… how is this possible?” he muttered under his breath, confusion clouding his face. His voice broke with disappointment as the truth sank in. “Negative? She’s not…?”

Unsatisfied, he rifled through the envelope again, finding nothing but the small Ziploc bag containing the hair sample. His frustration deepened. Pulling out his phone, he dialed the doctor’s number with quick, impatient

taps.

The line clicked, and the doctor’s calm voice came through. “Mr. Evergreen?”

“There has to be a mistake,” Damien said sharply, pacing a step. “The result…it can’t be right.”

The doctor’s voice remained steady. “I assure you, Mr. Evergreen, our lab is one of the best when it comes to DNA testing. There’s no possibility of an error.”
