“What did you just say?” His tone was low, clipped, but laced with a dangerous edge. His eyes, dark and storm- laden, fixed on Damien, though his grip on Alina’s trembling hand tightened as if anchoring them both.
Alina barely heard him. Her gaze was glued to the frail woman in the wheelchair. The world seemed to blur around her, every sound muffled except for the hollow pounding of her heartbeat.
That woman… she wasn’t just looking at her. She was staring into her, as if peering through time, her eyes wide and unblinking with recognition.
Alina one the other hand felt like she couldn’t breathe, she couldn’t deny it. The woman was an older version of herself. The same delicate jawline, the same expressive eyes, even the faint slope of the nose mirrored back at her. It was like staring at a distorted reflection of what she might look like decades from now.
Whispers erupted all around them, the guests unable to contain themselves.
“Did he say she is his sister?”
“No… that can’t be right. Isn’t she the daughter of the Dawn family?”
“No, she was adopted by the Dawn’s family.”
“Wait…so that means… She’s a lost heiress?”
“What…an Evergreen heiress? That’s insane.”
“She’s so lucky. No…unlucky. Look at her. Her dream wedding is probably ruined.”
“Well, if I were her, I wouldn’t complain. An Evergreen heiress? That’s all I’d ask for.”
The murmurs multiplied, bouncing around the cathedral like restless spirits, until the room swelled with speculation.
At the front pew, Seraphina shifted in her seat. Her earlier arrogance had drained, replaced by a visible discomfort. She twisted her fingers together, her nails digging into her palms, fidgeting like a trapped animal. The color had drained from her face, and though her lips pressed into a thin line, her wide eyes betrayed her panic.
Her parents weren’t faring better. Silas and Elena sat frozen in their seats, their expressions rigid, lips tight. Neither spoke, neither blinked, but the way they hunched in place betrayed them. They wished, more than anything, that they had chosen seats in the back where slipping away unnoticed might have been possible.

Lucian’s voice rose again, steady but sharp enough to command the hall’s attention. “You cannot come here with baseless speculation. Not without proof.” His words reverberated off the cathedral walls, cold fury brimming under each syllable.
Damien’s lips curved into a scoff, his gaze narrowing as if mocking Lucian’s attempt at control. His voice dripped with disdain as he gestured toward the frail woman in the chair. “Baseless? Look for yourself, Lucian. Is this not proof enough?” His arm extended, pointing directly at her. “Alina is the spitting image of our mother. Down to the last feature.”
All eyes turned.
Lucian’s jaw ticked, his nostrils flaring as his gaze, against his will, shifted to the woman Damien called his mother… Luna Evergreen. For a moment, his composure fractured. His eyes widened a fraction, dark pupils dilating as the resemblance registered..
It wasn’t imagined. Alina’s likeness to Luna was undeniable. The slope of her cheekbones, the curve of her lips, even the quiet intensity of her gaze, all of it mirrored.
Alina’s breath stuttered. No. No, it can’t be…
But Damien wasn’t finished.
“And if that isn’t enough proof…” Damien’s voice turned smug as he slipped a folded sheet of paper from his inner pocket. He held it deliberately, making sure every eye was trained on him before he extended it toward Lucian. “Then I suppose this will do.”
Lucian snatched it from him with a glare sharp enough to cut steel. He unfolded it with rigid movements, his eyes scanning the document quickly but thoroughly. The bold letters screamed off the page:
