A collective gasp swept through the cathedral. Heads turned. Eyes widened. The atmosphere shattered into chaos, murmurs erupting from every corner, people whispering to one another in disbelief.
“What?”
“Her own sister?”
“She tampered with a DNA test?”
“Oh my God…”
All eyes turned toward Serapina.
She flinched as if struck, her entire body trembling under the weight of their stares. Her mother, Elena, reached for her arm with a trembling hand, but Seraphina jerked away violently, her breath coming in shallow bursts. Her face was pale as paper, her lips quivering as if words fought to escape but couldn’t.
Alina’s gaze locked on hers…cold, disbelieving, and heartbreakingly calm. For a long, unbearable moment, she said nothing. She only stared, her mind spinning, her heart aching.
She had known Seraphina hated her, in fact everyone did. But this? To go so far as to erase her existence, to keep her from her real family…
Why did that still hurt?
Was this why Seraphina looked like she knew something Alina didn’t during her bridal shower night?
“Seraphina,” Alina finally said, her voice low, almost a whisper. “Why?”
The single word sliced through the murmurs like glass. Seraphina’s eyes darted up, wet and wide, as her lips parted soundlessly.
“Why would you do that?” Alina pressed, her voice trembling now. “You had a family who loved you. You had everything you ever wanted. So why were you so against me finding mine?”
The murmurs swelled again, a sea of judgment and disbelief. Seraphina’s chest rose and fell unevenly. Her throat bobbed painfully as she tried to speak, but no words came out. Her mother’s hand reached again, desperate, but Seraphina slapped it away.
And then… she snapped.
“Because you don’t deserve them!” she screamed, her voice echoing off the cathedral’s marble arches. The

crowd gasped collectively, but Seraphina was beyond caring. Her entire body trembled as tears streamed down her face, mascara staining her cheeks. “You don’t deserve any of this, Alina!”
Her words cracked with fury and something rawer….something broken.
“Why is it always you?” she demanded, her voice rising with each syllable. “Why do you get everything handed to you? You have Lucian Blackwood who is the most powerful man in Elaris wrapped around your finger like some kind of prize, even though you don’t deserve him! And now-” she let out a half–sob, half- laugh, “—now you turn out to be the lost heiress of the Evergreen family, the family that rules Ravinne City! Why is it always you? Why do you get to be so lucky?”
Gasps filled the room.
Alina’s eyes shimmered, not with tears, but with restrained pain. Her fingers clenched tightly around the bouquet in her hand before she finally spoke in a voice that was steady, but edged with disbelief.
“Lucky?” she said quietly, her lips curving into something between a bitter smile and a tremor. “You think I’m lucky?”
She took a step closer, her voice trembling as her anger surfaced beneath the calm. “I grew up in an orphanage, Seraphina. I didn’t even know what a real family felt like. I had no one. Nothing. And even when your family adopted me, I lived under your shadow every single day. I wore your hand–me–downs, smiled when you humiliated me, stayed silent when you made sure I never forgot I didn’t belong.”
Lucian, who had been watching silently from beside her, noticed the way her hand shook. Without hesitation, he reached for it… his grip firm, grounding, a silent promise. His thumb brushed the back of her palm, urging her to breathe.
“Breathe baby.” He whispered softly, his tone low enough for only her to hear.
But Alina’s eyes never left Seraphina’s.
“You talk about luck,” Alina continued, her voice breaking slightly. “But all I ever wanted was to be seen. To be loved. To be wanted. I wasn’t lucky, Seraphina… I was surviving.”
Seraphina’s breath hitched. Her face twisted in a mix of fury, jealousy, and despair. “You always act like you’re untouchable,” she spat, her voice shaking. “Like nothing can touch you… just because you have Lucian. You think that makes you better than everyone?”
Her eyes darted toward Lucian then back to Alina, venom glinting there. “You embarrassed me in front of the world, Alina. During the Alinova opening… you made me look like a fool. You destroyed everything I worked for!”
Alina inhaled sharply. “You embarrassed yourself,” she said simply. “You tried to steal my designs and pass them off as yours. That wasn’t me, Seraphina. That was you. You did that.”
The silence that followed was deafening.
Seraphina’s face crumpled, her voice splintering as her rage turned frantic. “You’ve been a ghost designer for me for years! You worked for me! So why did you suddenly decide to rebel, huh? Why couldn’t you just stay where you belong?”
