Alina kept on staring at him in disbelief, her breath catching somewhere between her ribs and her throat. For a moment, she thought she had misheard him. That the exhaustion and chaos of everything happening around her had twisted her perception. But the silence that followed was heavy and absolute and it told her she hadn’t imagined it.
Those words had actually left his mouth.
Her heart thudded painfully, a sharp ache spreading through her chest. “You didn’t mean that,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “You were joking, right?”
Lucian didn’t answer immediately. His gaze lingered on her, unreadable, his features carved in that frightening calmness that always meant he was locking something away. Finally, he said quietly, “I wasn’t.”
It felt like the ground beneath her had cracked open.
Alina blinked rapidly, her lips parting as if to speak but no words came. There was something in his tone… cold, detached, almost foreign. The last time she had seen him like this… was in her past life. But even then, his coldness had never been directed at her. Never.
“Lucian,” she said again, this time her voice edged with panic. “You can’t be serious. After everything we’ve been through together, after everything we’ve survived, you’re just going to push me away because a group of strangers are saying we can’t get married?”
Her voice broke midway, the disbelief twisting into something rawer….anger, maybe, or desperation. She didn’t care if her words hurt the Evergreens standing there. She didn’t even look at them. Her eyes were fixed solely on him.
Lucian’s expression didn’t shift. His silence cut through her words sharper than any blade.
Alina felt something inside her begin to tremble. “Say something!” she demanded, her voice rising. “Anything!”
He didn’t. He just stood there, silent, as if her pain was a storm he was forcing himself to withstand.
She swallowed hard, her heart hammering painfully. “You know what’s funny?” she said bitterly, her voice trembling. “Back then…back when I used to run away from you…you’d crawl into the depths of hell to find me. You’d fight anyone, do anything, tear the world apart just to bring me back. And now-” she let out a shaky laugh, though it sounded more like a sob, “now you’re willing to do nothing. Just let them take me away.”
Lucian’s hands clenched by his sides. Still, he said nothing.
His silence burned worse than words ever could.
Alina stared at him, her throat tightening. She knew him better than anyone. She could tell when he was lying, when he was hiding something. His silence wasn’t indifference,it was a prison he had built around himself. And that realization only made her angrier.

Chapter 248
Her voice trembled with accusation. “Did Darius say something to you?”
Lucian’s gaze flickered, just for a fraction of a second. It was all the answer she needed.
“Did he?” she pressed, her tone sharp, her chest heaving.
Lucian finally spoke, his voice low and controlled. “Nothing that wasn’t the truth.”
Her brows furrowed. “What truth?” She demanded.

He hesitated, then looked at her with that same infuriating calm. “It’s best if you obey your father, Alina.”
The words made the room go still. Even Darius looked momentarily surprised at how compliant he sounded. Luna’s lips parted slightly, her expression softening in shock and confusion.
Alina felt her whole body stiffen. “You’re really saying that?” she whispered, disbelief flooding her eyes. “That I should just listen to him? That’s it?”
Lucian’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t respond.
Something inside her shattered. The tears she’d been holding back blurred her vision, anger and heartbreak mixing into something unbearable. “Get out,” she said quietly. When he didn’t move, her voice rose, cracking with emotion. “Get out, Lucian!“.
Her trembling hand reached for the pillow beside her, and before she knew it, she hurled it at him with all the strength her anger could summon. The pillow hit his chest and dropped to the floor without even stirring
him.
He didn’t flinch.
He didn’t look back.
Lucian turned silently and walked out of the room, leaving nothing behind but the echo of her breaking heart.
As the door closed behind him, Alina’s breath came out in ragged bursts.
Darius exhaled through his nose, his expression turning into something between disdain and pity. “That,” he said coldly, “is the man you wanted to marry? A weak man who can’t even fight for you?”
Alina’s head snapped toward him, eyes blazing with fury. “Lucian isn’t weak!” she spat, her voice shaking. “He’s a better man than you’ll ever be.”
Darius’s jaw tightened, but before he could respond, Damien spoke, his tone low and firm. “Alina.”
Her head turned sharply toward him, her tear–streaked face filled with defiance. “Don’t,” she warned. “Don’t you dare talk to me.”
Her chest rose and fell quickly, anger burning through every word. “You should have stayed in your city, Damien. All of you should have. I was fine before you came. I was happy.”

She turned to Darius, then to Luna, her gaze fierce and wounded. “I was looking forward to meeting my birth family,” she said, her tone trembling but strong. “But if I had known that meeting you would ruin the only thing that made me happy, I would’ve been fine not meeting you at all in this life.”
Luna’s face softened instantly, pain flooding her features. “Alina-” she began, her voice fragile, breaking.
“Don’t.” Alina cut her off, her tone harsh and quivering. “Just don’t. Get out. All of you. I want to be alone.”
Darius’s eyes hardened again. He didn’t raise his voice, he didn’t need to. His authority filled the room. “If you had grown up with us,” he said quietly, “you would have known that this decision is what’s best for you.”
Alina met his gaze head–on, her eyes cold and glistening with tears. “Well,” she said slowly, her voice sharp enough to wound, “I’m glad I didn’t grow up with you. I’m glad I was taken as a child.”
The words hit like a blow.
Luna’s tears spilled freely now, her hand flying to her mouth as if to contain the sob threatening to escape. Even Darius’s face shifted, something flickered there, guilt maybe, or a shadow of regret…but it was gone almost instantly, masked by his usual stoicism.
