Lucian’s chest rose and fell once, slowly. Every muscle in his body tightened as the words replayed in his head. Lucius Stormvale. The name he had buried with his past. The identity he thought had died long before Alina ever came into his life.

Darius noticed the sudden tension, his brows drawing together. What’s wrong, Mr. Blackwood?he asked, studying Lucian’s face.

Lucian’s expression gave nothing away, but his pulse was a thunderous roar in his ears. Nothing,he said quietly, his voice calm but sharp around the edges. Justan interesting name.”

Alina frowned, looking between the two men, sensing something off. Lucian?she whispered.

He met her eyes, and for a fleeting moment, there was pain, so raw it burned through his usual composure. But then he masked it, the familiar cold returning to his gaze.

Lucius Stormvale.” He repeated under his breath, so quietly no one caught it but himself.

The man Darius was talking about, the one Alina was promised to….was him.

Alina rushed towards Lucian in panic.

Lucian, she whispered, her voice trembling with a thousand unsaid words. She pushed past her father and the guards, rushing to his side. I have no intention of marrying this socalled Lucius Stormvale. You have to believe me—

But Lucian didn’t move. His voice came out cold, sharp enough to slice through the hope trembling in her tone. I don’t care,he said flatly. And you should leave.

The words struck like a blow.

Her chest rose and fell in disbelief as her eyes searched his face for any sign of any flickerthat he didn’t mean them. What?she breathed. What do you mean leave?

Lucian’s gaze hardened. He was fighting himself, every muscle in his body coiled, screaming against what his mouth was about to say. What are you still doing here, Alina?he asked, his voice low but controlled, almost too calm. This isn’t your home anymore.

Her breath hitched. For a moment, it looked as if the ground beneath her shifted. Thisthis was my home,” she said, her voice cracking. Everything I built, everything I amit’s here.”

Not anymore.Lucian replied, the words sounding like they were dragged from his throat. He turned slightly,

unable to meet her eyes now.

Alina stumbled back, staring at him as though she no longer recognized the man standing before her. Her fingers trembled at her sides, curling into fists to stop herself from shaking.

Lucian’s heart twisted violently at the sight. He didn’t mean to hurt her….God, it was the last thing he wanted.

But he couldn’t tell her the truth. Not yet. Not when danger still lingered in the shadows. Alina was stubborn, if she knew the real reason behind his coldness, she would never leave, no matter the risk.

This was the only way.

He drew in a steadying breath, forcing his tone to stay even. Please, Alinaleave.

The sound of that please startled her. It wasn’t coldno, not this time. There was something in it, something pleading, something that made her heart stutter. For a fleeting second, she saw through the ice in his voice and caught a glimpse of the man she loved, the man who once looked at her as though she was his entire world.

But the hurt was louder than the hope.

So you really do not care if I get married to this Lucius Stormvale? Her voice trembled at first but rose at the end, sharp and accusing.

Lucian’s lips twitched..,barely. He almost smiled. The irony of it all was unbearable, almost cruel. If only she knew.

No,he said, forcing his tone back into steel. I don’t. In fact, I think you’ll be happy with him.

Alina’s eyes widened, disbelief cutting through the air between them. For a moment, she just stared, silent, wounded, and furious all at once. Then her expression hardened, and her chin lifted with defiance.

Fine,” she snapped, voice shaking as emotion fought to stay contained. But don’t you dare regret it, Lucian. You’re the one pushing me into the arms of another man.

Her words hung in the air, bitter and trembling.

Lucian’s throat tightened. He wanted to reach for her, to pull her back, to tell her that he was that manthat there was no one else. But he didn’t move. He stood still, rooted in place, watching her through the veil of his

own restraint.

Alina-He started, but she had already turned away.

Let’s go.She said to Darius without sparing him a glance. Her voice was brittle, breaking in the middle, but she walked with her head high.

Darius, stonefaced as ever, gave Lucian a stiff nod. There was no warmth in his eyes, only judgment and a trace of finality. Then he followed his daughter and wife out. The Evergreen guards moved swiftly, surrounding them as they exited the Blackwood mansion.

The door closed behind them with a dull, echoing thud that seemed to split something inside Lucian.

He remained there, motionless for a long while. The silence was suffocating. Through the grand windows, he watched as the fleet of black cars rolled down the driveway, their glossy bodies reflecting the fading afternoon light. The sound of their engines grew fainter until all that was left was the hollow hum of the empty hall.

Lucian’s jaw clenched. His hand drifted to his chest, fingers brushing against the spot where the ache was deepest. Every instinct in him screamed to run after her, to call her name, to undo the last five minutes, but

he forced himself still.

He had made his choice. For her safety. For her life.
