Rebirth Of The Heiress And The Tycoon's Lover (Alina) novel Chapter 44

Chapter 44

ALINA’S POV.

“Get off me!” I screamed, struggling to fend Adrian off, just as the door to the room was slammed open.

Adrian, annoyed by the interruption, turned to see who the intruder was.

“Who the hell are you?” Adrian asked, with wide eyes as he stared at the stranger. But his answer came in the form of a fist to the face.

The intruder yanked him off me and began throwing relentless punches hard and fast, hitting any part of Adrian he could touch.

“Hey! Stop!” I yelled, rushing forward to pull the stranger off Adrian. He snapped his head toward me, fury still evident in his face, but his expression softened when his eyes met my terrified ones.

“You’ve knocked him out.” I told him softly, my voice shaking.

“Are you okay?” The stranger asked, wiping the blood off his knuckles onto Adrian’s white dress shirt before standing up.

I stared at Adrian’s unconscious form on the floor, with worry in my eyes. He deserved it, but I didn’t want him dead.

“Don’t worry, he’s alive.” The stranger assured me calmly.

“Who are you?” I asked confused, my eyes scanning his face to see if I would recognize him, but I didn’t.

He was tall, dark-haired, with striking baby-blue eyes and a physique that made it obvious he hit the gym often.

But who was he?

“No time for questions. Come with me.” He said, grabbing my hand and pulling me out of the room. He closed the door quietly behind us to avoid drawing attention to the unconscious man inside.

Just as we rounded a corner and hid behind the wall, I saw Lucian, Ace, and lastly, Seraphina standing in front of the very door we had just exited.

My heart stopped, my eyes widened as panic poured in my chest. I shot the stranger a quick look of surprise.

Had he known Lucian was going to show up?

“How did you-”

“Shhh.” He hushed me gently, pressing a finger to his lips.

I obeyed and turned back to watch the scene unfold, my breath held tight in my throat.

My fists clenched when she saw Seraphina say something while pointing at the door.

This must be her doing, I thought bitterly.

I saw Lucian’s face flash with rage just before he kicked the door open. But I was able to catch a glimpse of the rage shifting to confusion as all three of them walked farther into the room.

“Let’s go.” The stranger whispered, pulling me away through another hallway. Soon, we were back in the ballroom.

But he didn’t stop. He kept leading me until we stepped out onto a balcony.

“Are you good?” He asked, finally letting go of my hand and resting his own on the railing as he looked up at the night sky.

“Yeah.” I breathed out, trying to settle my nerves. “Thanks for that.”

“It’s nothing.” He dismissed with a casual shrug.

“No, don’t downplay what just happened. You literally just saved my life, you have no idea.” My tone was filled with sincerity.

I didn’t know how on earth I was going to explain myself If Lucian had walked in on that scene… I shuddered at the thought. I wouldn’t just be in deep shit, I’d be back to square one in our already unstable relationship.

“Alright then, treat me to coffee and we can call it even.” He suggested, smiling at me.

“I… uhm….” I hesitated, nervously playing with her fingers.

Noticing my hesitation, his smile wavered. “It’s fine if you don’t want to.” He said quickly, letting out an awkward chuckle.

“No, it’s not that at all.” I rushed out. “You know what? I will treat you to that coffee. It’s the least I can do after everything….”

“Louis.” He said, filling in.

“Louis.” I smiled. “Nice to meet you, Louis. I’m Alina.” I reached out her hand.

“I know who you are, Alina.” He chuckled, taking my hand briefly before letting go.

“You do?” My tone was a mix of shock and confusion.

“Yes, I do.” He laughed again, those baby-blue eyes lighting up with charm. He seemed like a naturally cheerful person.

“I mean, I think everyone in the ballroom knows who you are by now.” He added.

“Oh.” I felt a blush rise to my cheeks.

What was I thinking? For a second, I’d wondered if he was the one stalking me, that maybe that’s how he knew who I was.

I really need to chill out.

“Anyway, thanks again for your help.” I said, tone filled with gratitude.

“You’re welcome, Alina.” He replied displaying his pearly-white dentition.

He really does smile a lot.

“How did you know I needed help, anyway?” I asked curiously.

He hesitated for just a second, I might’ve missed it if I hadn’t been paying attention. His smile faltered, just a little, before returning.

“I heard you screaming while I was walking by.” He said, but I shot him a doubtful look.

There was no way he would’ve heard my scream unless he had been really close to the door. Too close. If he were just casually walking by like he claimed, he wouldn’t have noticed anything.

He must’ve seen the doubt in my eyes, because he quickly added, “Fine, I’ll tell you the truth.” He raised his hands in mock

surrender, similing again. “I was going to the restroom when I saw you being pulled into a room.”

“And you couldn’t just walk away?” I asked, raising a brow.

“Well, I was curious.” He shrugged. “Plus, it felt… off.”

“Hmm.”I nodded slowly.

Something about his story still didn’t sit quite right, but I shrugged it off. I’m just glad he was there.

“So… about that coffee.” He said, changing the subject..

“I’ll leave you with my contact. You can text me at your earliest convenience and we can work something out.” I said.

He pulled out his phone, and I called out my number for him.

But just as he slid his phone into his pocket, Lucian appeared.

“I’ve been looking everywhere for you,” he said. He didn’t sound happy. “Who is this?” He glares when his eyes landed on Louis.

My heart skipped. I couldn’t tell him who Louis was without explaining how we met, so I lied.

“I don’t know,” I shrugged. “I just met him.”

“The name’s Louis.” He stepped forward and stretched out his hand toward Lucian. “Nice to meet you.”

Lucian stared at the offered hand with clear distaste, then turned to me.

“Let’s go.” He said, grabbing my hand and pulling me away.

“Nice to meet you, Alina.” Louis called after me.

Was he crazy? I wish I could smack his ever grinning face.

“I thought you didn’t know who he was.” Lucian gritted out as we left the venue.

“I don’t.” I told him.

It wasn’t entirely a lie. I really didn’t know who Louis was, I had only just met him.

“Well, from the look of things, it sounded like you two are well acquainted.” Lucian spat in a sharp and accusing tone.

“I really do not know who he is.” I repeated in a firmer tone.

“Well, stay away from him. I do not like him.” He grumbled.

I was half tempted to say, ‘You don’t like anybody.’ But I knew that wouldn’t end well.

“I will,” I said instead, wrapping my arm around his and giving him a gentle tug. “Come on, are you mad at me?” I stood on my toes and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek.
