After Old Mr. Stone said these words, he sent everyone back, with only Hugh hesitating for a while and didn't leave. Instead, he stayed behind, looking to speak his mind at his father, struggling with what to say.
The Old Mr. Stone glanced at him, then said coldly, "What is it?"
Knowing that his father had always been displeased with him, Hugh had grown accustomed to this and wasn't too distressed. Quietly, he began to speak, “Dad, I stayed behind because I want to talk about Lambert.”
Upon hearing that unfilial grandson's name, a wave of irritation and annoyance rose in Old Mr. Stone's eyes.
He asked coldly, “What about him?”
Hugh glanced at his father with a stern face. After some hesitation, he spoke out of paternal instinct on behalf of his son, "Admittedly, Lambert's actions have been rather excessive at times, but fortunately, Beverly has made concessions. So, Dad, I hope you can stop picking on the two of them."
Old Mr. Stone squinted his eyes at his son's words.
He scrutinized his third son, then scoffed and said coldly, “You should take that speech to your good son.” The Old Mr. Stone's feelings towards Lambert were complex. He treasured Lambert's talent while also resenting that he wasn't a direct descendant of the Stone Family.
He never made up his mind whether to cut off ties or to cultivate further relations with him.
If he truly disregarded this grandson as a member of the Stone family and expelled him, this kid would inevitably become the Stone family's most significant opposition and menace. But if he kept him in the Stone family, it seemed that with Lambert's formidable capabilities, neither Arnold nor Finel could compete with him.
If all the Stone family's estates were taken away by this youngster, that would be even more intolerable.
Therefore, Old Mr. Stone was genuinely conflicted.
He couldn't decide how to deal with his non-biological grandson, Lambert. Fortunately, Hugh and this kid have a good father-son relationship. Thus, Lambert would be respectful of his parents and wouldn't cause any harm to the Stone family regardless of what happens.
At least for now.
Hugh was unaware of what his father was contemplating. Upon hearing his patronizing chortle, he began to panic.
Not to mention the words his father said afterward.
This indicates that the father is probably still upset with Lambert.
Hugh hastily said: "Dad, he's still young..."
Old Mr. Stone interrupted him directly, his face darkening as he said, "He is already capable of this much. If he truly rises, could we still handle him?"
Hugh immediately fell silent.
He realized that no matter what he said, he would only further his father's negative impression of his son, so he shut his mouth. He regretted his decision to stay here and plead for Lambert, which instead made his father angry.
He shouldn't have defended Lambert because his father's mood had improved.
Perhaps he was too careless.
...
Meanwhile, the returned elder uncle sat silently in his study, his face somewhat gloomy.
Khloe had cooked a bowl of porridge and handed it to her husband with a smile, "Have some warm porridge. You've seemed out of sorts recently. Is it because of the tasks Father has assigned you?"
The elder uncle raised his gaze, took the porridge from his wife, and responded, "It's fine. But, the conversation for now is not about this, there’s something I need to discuss with you."
Seeing her husband so serious, Khloe immediately became solemn, "What's up?"
"Today, Father summoned me and my brothers to discuss an issue. It's about the marriage alliance between the Stone and Lawrence family. Even though Lambert rejected the Lawrence family and caused such a huge commotion, the marriage alliance between the Stone and Lawrence family must still continue."
Khloe's jaw dropped in surprise, "But Lambert is already married!"
Elder Uncle: "I know you might be surprised, but let me finish. So Father is suggesting that either Arnold or Finely should marry Beverly."
Khloe stared wide-eyed, she seemed very surprised.
Elder Uncle continued, "You should communicate with Arnold about this matter. The marriage alliance with Lawrnce's Corporation has to fall on Arnold. This would tremendously increase his chances of becoming the successor. Do you understand?"
Khloe hesitated and responded, "But Beverly has a bad reputation. She's even been in jail. She's likely had relations with others based on her behavior. I feel it's unfair to let Arnold marry her."
