For the first time, Lambert felt the urge to cry. His icy gaze locked onto his son as he stubbornly retorted, "I didn’t do it."
Ariana sneered. "Then how do you explain the mark on his hand? Care to enlighten me?"
Lambert’s heart ached with injustice, but he maintained his frosty demeanor. "He must have rolled on it himself while playing. That’s why it’s red."
Ariana’s expression remained impassive, clearly unconvinced.
At that moment, Lambert, wronged beyond belief, felt an almost murderous rage toward his own flesh and blood. But before he could utter another word, the little troublemaker stirred again. The child nuzzled against Ariana, his voice tiny and pitiful, "Daddy hit me."
Lambert: "..."
Ariana’s face was stone-cold. "Anything else to say?"
Lambert shot his son a glare that could have withered a lesser being, his voice dripping with icy resignation. "I have nothing to say." In all his years, Lambert had never imagined he’d be brought down like this—and by his own son, no less. He was wronged with no way to clear his name. But it didn’t matter. He’d remember this.
When the kid was older, Lambert vowed to make him pay. If he didn’t, he wasn’t his father.
Ariana delivered her verdict without hesitation. "You’re sleeping in the guest room tonight. The boy stays with me."
The hatred in Lambert’s eyes deepened instantly. He narrowed his gaze at his son, a cold, emotionless smile playing on his lips.
The very next day, Lambert wasted no time in exiling his son—straight to his grandmother’s house.
The old woman was overjoyed to see her great-grandson. She even praised Lambert for once, remarking how thoughtful it was of him to bring little Lucian over without her having to ask. What surprised her even more was that days passed, and neither Lambert nor Ariana showed any intention of taking the child back. This only added to the old lady’s delight.
However, Lucian was far from happy. After waiting for what felt like an eternity without seeing his mother, he grew increasingly restless. Children, after all, aren't known for their patience. After a few more days of waiting, Lucian began to cry. It wasn’t a loud, demanding cry but a quiet, heart-wrenching sob. Tears streamed down his face as he clutched his tiny hands and whimpered for his mom, a sight that could melt even the hardest of hearts.
The elderly lady, seeing no other option, had to ask Lambert and his wife to come and take little Lucian back to stay with them for a few days. When Ariana arrived, she was surprised, but her heart softened instantly upon seeing her son’s pitiful state. She gently said, "Grandma, we’ll bring Lucian back to visit you next time. For now, I’ll take him home."
The old lady sighed, "I’m just glad you’re so thoughtful. Let the child stay with you more. He’s still young and needs his parents."
Ariana was momentarily taken aback. Wasn’t it the old lady who had insisted on keeping Lucian longer? She had been eager to bring her son home for days, but Lambert had told her that the old lady missed the child terribly and wanted him to stay a bit longer. Ariana had felt torn, thinking that if she couldn’t bring him back, she’d at least visit. But then Lambert had added that seeing them would only make Lucian beg to go home, so it was better to wait and not upset the old lady. That’s why Ariana had held back.
But now, the old lady’s words seemed to suggest that it wasn’t her who wanted to keep Yang, but rather that they had offered to let the child stay with her. A flicker of understanding crossed Ariana’s brow instantly.
She couldn’t help but feel a mix of amusement and exasperation. She hadn’t expected Lambert to be so childish, even going so far as to play tricks on their own son. But since he was her husband, she decided to let it slide. Clearing her throat slightly, she didn’t expose his little scheme. Instead, she continued with a smile, "Well, I’ll bring Lucian over to visit you and Grandpa from time to time."
The old lady smiled warmly. "That’s good."
…
Once they returned home, Lambert’s eyebrows shot up in surprise as he saw the little rascal back in their midst.
