It had to be admitted—Georgia's words moments ago had struck a painful chord in Gilbert's heart.
Yet he knew she hadn't meant any harm.
After a brief silence, he sighed softly and said, "Georgia, I understand your nature, so I know where you're coming from. You and my sister-in-law were close, and after her passing, you poured all that affection into Kiara and Jane. But now, you see it yourself—we owe Ariana far too much. And as for Jane... well, I don’t need to spell it out. You know what I mean."
Georgia said nothing.
A flicker of helplessness passed through Gilbert's eyes.
He knew Georgia was kind-hearted. It was her gentle, unassuming nature that had captivated him all those years ago. So when his younger brother and sister-in-law passed away, he understood why she took Jane in and treated her so well—just as she now did with Kiara. But times had changed.
He understood. But Ariana didn’t.
If things continued this way, the rift between mother and daughter might never heal.
That was the last thing Gilbert wanted.
No matter how much he cared for his niece, no matter how deeply he sympathized with her, his own daughter would always come first. He couldn’t deny it—he wasn’t as selfless as his wife. At his core, he was selfish.
Georgia exhaled quietly as Gilbert held her.
Though she had weathered this storm, she couldn’t shake the urge to revisit her earlier proposal.
After hesitating for a long moment, she finally mustered the courage to speak again, her voice tentative.
Gilbert frowned.
She glanced at him cautiously before continuing, "Gilbert, I can’t let the White family legacy crumble under my watch. I know everything you’ve done for me—that’s exactly why I feel so guilty. I couldn’t give you a son, and now Ariana is married into the Stone family. This is the only way. Do you understand?"
She had always known exactly which expression would soften Gilbert's heart.
So Georgia let out a weary, dejected sigh, her eyes dimming with quiet sorrow—just enough to make Gilbert's chest tighten with guilt.
How could he not know that everything his wife did was for his sake?
After a brief silence, he relented. "Alright, I'll talk to Ariana and see if one of the twins can take the White Family's surname. If that’s not possible… then we’ll just have to let Kiara’s future child inherit the family name." Truthfully, Gilbert had never wanted to resort to this, but seeing Georgia like this, he had no choice but to compromise.
What he didn’t realize was that even this concession left her dissatisfied.
A flicker of panic stirred in her chest.
That offhand remark Ariana had once joked about—letting one of the twins bear the White surname—still gnawed at her. Though Ariana’s expression at the time had made it clear she was only teasing, what if she suddenly changed her mind? If that happened, the White Group would ultimately fall into Ariana’s hands.
And if that were the outcome…
What was the point of going through all this trouble, only to drive another wedge between mother and daughter?
