Over on Ariana's side, the twin boys had brought her family full circle.
Though she didn't have a daughter, the three little rascals were already enough to drive her up the wall with their endless mischief. So, she figured this was plenty—no more kids for her. Besides, she already knew Allison was carrying a girl this time.
If she ever really longed for a daughter, she could just dote on Allison’s baby as her own.
Come to think of it, Allison’s due date was probably close.
Just as the thought crossed her mind, her phone suddenly rang. Ariana glanced at the screen—it was Allison herself.
Speak of the devil.
Before Ariana could even get a word out, a weak, trembling voice came through the line. Allison sounded like she was on the verge of tears, her breaths labored as she struggled to speak. "Ariana… I—I’m in so much pain… It hurts… my stomach…" Her words were broken, each syllable a fight against whatever agony gripped her.
The call crackled with interference, as if it might cut off any second.
Ariana’s blood ran cold. "Allison?! What’s wrong? Where are you? I’m coming right now!"
But Allison seemed too far gone to respond coherently. She just kept whimpering about the pain before the line went dead—slowly, torturously.
In that instant, Ariana felt her soul leave her body.
She snatched her car keys and bolted out the door, speeding toward Allison’s place while frantically dialing Stefan. What the hell was going on? Why wasn’t he with her? But no matter how many times she called, his phone remained unreachable.
Furious and terrified, Ariana immediately called Lambert instead. She quickly explained the situation and demanded he track down Stefan.
At that moment, Stefan wasn’t at the office.
But Allison was his wife—and Ariana’s closest friend. Lambert didn’t brush it off. After hanging up, he instructed Assistant Hills to handle his schedule before heading straight to the address Ariana had given him.
In the end, Ariana found Allison in the very apartment she used to rent.
The place had since been bought—a little secret shared between the two of them. Back in high school, Ariana had often felt neglected at home, overshadowed by her parents' obvious favoritism toward her sister, Jane. Frustrated and heartbroken, she had moved into the school dormitory. But when conflicts with her roommates made life unbearable, Allison quietly rented this apartment—just for the two of them.
Now that they were older, they had purchased it together. Whenever Allison was in a bad mood or Ariana clashed with her parents, they would retreat there.
Thankfully, Ariana had acted quickly. After failing to find Allison at the Morris residence, she had driven straight to the apartment. Otherwise, she dreaded to think what might have happened. When she arrived, Allison was curled up in agony, her face drenched in cold sweat, moaning as if on the verge of passing out.
And then she saw the blood.
Ariana’s mind went blank. Without stopping to ask questions, she immediately dialed for an ambulance before helping Allison up. Fortunately, Lambert arrived just in time, and with his assistance, they rushed her to the hospital at top speed.
...
Stefan didn’t show up until three hours after the incident.
By then, Allison was still in surgery.
Ariana sat silently in the hallway outside. The moment she spotted Stefan, she strode toward him.
Lambert slightly furrowed his brows but didn't stop Ariana's outburst.
"Where the hell have you been?" Ariana demanded, her voice trembling with rage. "Don't you know Allison is eight months pregnant? And you dare turn off your phone at a time like this? God, I regret ever introducing you two!" Her hands clenched into fists, imagining with horror what might have happened had she arrived even a minute later.
