And so, Ariana had to endure Fanny's incessant rambling all afternoon.
By the end of it, the corner of Ariana's mouth was twitching in irritation. She kept glancing at her watch, silently willing time to pass faster—until, mercifully, the clock finally struck seven in the evening.
She let out a quiet sigh of relief.
"I'll have the cook prepare dinner," she said. "What would you like to eat?"
Fanny finally stopped her endless chatter, her expression turning unusually serious as she pondered the question. The two little ones, watching her with wide-eyed curiosity, unconsciously mimicked her thoughtful pose, their tiny hands resting on their chins. The sight was so comical that Ariana nearly burst out laughing, though inwardly, she wondered if she should limit Fanny's time with the children.
She was genuinely worried...
What if the kids ended up inheriting Fanny's lack of common sense? If that happened, she’d have no one to blame but herself.
Luckily, Fanny remained blissfully unaware of Ariana’s internal struggle.
After a full minute of deliberation, Fanny rattled off her dinner preferences without a hint of hesitation or politeness. Ariana chuckled and signaled a maid to relay the order to the kitchen. The maid nodded and hurried off.
Fanny watched the servant leave, then blinked and leaned in. "Ariana," she said, lowering her voice, "Your husband isn’t going to suddenly show up, is he?"
Ariana raised an eyebrow. "Hmm?"
Fanny let out a small, distressed noise. "I mean—when is he coming back? Please tell me it’s not anytime soon."
Ariana stared at her, speechless.
Honestly, what kind of question was that? Sitting in someone else’s home, openly wishing the man of the house wouldn’t return? If Lambert were here right now, his face would have darkened instantly. Amused but keeping a straight face, Ariana cleared her throat lightly. "Well, I can check for you. Why? Is there something you don’t want Lambert to hear?"
Actually, even if Lambert came back, it wouldn’t be a problem.
Lambert had always been the type to avoid unnecessary interactions with other women, even if they were friends of Ariana. Back when Ariana used to spend time with Allison, Lambert would simply give them a brief glance before quietly excusing himself, leaving the two of them to their own company. So, if that was all Fanny was worried about, there really was no need.
But this time, she had completely misread the situation.
After Ariana finished speaking, Fanny shook her head slightly, then admitted with an awkward smile, "It's nothing, really. I just didn’t want him interrupting us."
Ariana: "…"
…
That evening, when Lambert received the text from his wife, his expression softened for a brief moment, only to darken the instant he read the message.
His brows furrowed, and his face took on an unmistakably displeased look.
Assistant Hills happened to be nearby.
As he organized Lambert’s documents, he couldn’t help but notice the deep frown on his boss’s face. Finally, he ventured cautiously, "Mr. Stone? Aren’t you leaving?"
Today, the CEO had deliberately wrapped up all his work early and even canceled his usual social engagements—all for the sake of heading home. Assistant Hills often found himself envious of the strong bond between Mr. Stone and his wife.
But seeing the stormy expression on his boss’s face now…
Assistant Hills suddenly felt uneasy.
Had something gone wrong with one of their projects? The thought made his stomach tighten. He’d already been pulling overtime for a solid month—all he wanted was to finally go home and rest—
Please don't let anything else go wrong.
Otherwise, he might just collapse from exhaustion.
Hearing his assistant's words, Lambert snapped out of his daze. With an indifferent expression, he settled back into his chair and said, "Right. I won’t be leaving just yet. Bring me all the remaining documents that need to be reviewed."
