Seeing Maxwell's enthusiastic demeanor, Beverly's smile grew even sweeter.
She knew Maxwell was her aunt's biological son—in other words, the legitimate heir. His older half-brother, on the other hand, was born out of wedlock. Under normal circumstances, that would make Maxwell the next in line to take over the company. At the time, Beverly had no idea that Damon had already been secretly chosen as the successor. Maxwell's mother had raised no objections, and it was precisely because of her silence that his father felt confident making such a decision. After all, it was unheard of for a legitimate heir to be passed over in favor of a bastard.
But the truth was, Maxwell had no talent for business whatsoever. Handing the company over to him would only lead to its decline—he was utterly clueless when it came to corporate affairs. His father had agonized over the decision for years, unable to reach a conclusion.
It wasn’t until his wife calmly expressed that she didn’t mind that he finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Since Damon had grown up in the Castro Family's household as well, his stepmother, though not particularly warm toward him, didn’t harbor any resentment either. Damon and Maxwell got along well, so the arrangement was acceptable to her. She knew her own son’s limitations and didn’t want to force the issue. At the very least, Damon wouldn’t mistreat him—Maxwell could still live comfortably as a shareholder with generous annual dividends.
But Beverly was unaware of all this, which was why she had been bending over backward to win Maxwell’s favor.
And now, her efforts were paying off—Maxwell had grown quite fond of her.
After spending several days playing games and chatting with him, Beverly felt they had grown close enough for her to casually probe, “Cousin, you’re about to graduate, right? Why haven’t you started an internship at the company yet?”
Oblivious to any ulterior motive, Maxwell simply took it as small talk.
So he casually replied, "Oh, I'm planning to go pro in racing after graduation. My parents have already given their blessing."
Maxwell was absolutely passionate about racing—it was his greatest hobby, and he possessed extraordinary talent in the field. To him, racing wasn't just a pastime; it was his life's ultimate pursuit and dream.
Beverly froze for a moment.
She stared blankly at Maxwell before blurting out, "Racing? But what about the company? And besides, racing is dangerous!"
She assumed Maxwell just wanted one last reckless adventure before fully stepping into his role as the future chairman of the conglomerate. But the risks were enormous. Anyone else in his position—with an ambitious half-brother like Damon eyeing the inheritance—would have already started interning at the company long before graduation. Yet here was Maxwell, not only skipping corporate experience during college but also planning to dive straight into racing after graduation.
By the time he finished his racing stint, the company might already be in Damon's hands. Didn't he feel any urgency?
Maxwell, however, just looked puzzled for a second before shrugging. "Naturally, Castro Corporation will go to my brother." Damon had a sharp business acumen—even Lambert from the Stone family was on par with him. Under his leadership, the Castro Group had expanded dramatically in recent years, now ranking among the top three conglomerates.
So, of course, his brother would inherit it.
Beverly's face stiffened, her mind reeling. When Maxwell finally glanced up from his game and noticed her expression, he asked, "What's wrong?"
She shook her head, forcing the chaotic thoughts away. Then, carefully probing, she added, "But... won't your mother be upset about this?" She suspected Maxwell was falling into the classic rich heir's trap—prioritizing dreams over family duty. Anxious, she quickly brought up his mother, hoping to sway him.
At that, Maxwell burst into laughter. "Relax, didn’t I just say my parents are fine with it? And don’t worry about the racing—I’m too good to crash."
With that, he happily resumed his game, completely oblivious to the increasingly sour expression on Beverly's face.
Beverly had truly never expected—
