After Ariana left, Gilbert turned to his wife and asked, "What did you two talk about? Ariana seemed upset when she left."
Georgia didn't even want to hear that name.
Her head was pounding, so she simply shook her head dismissively. "Nothing important."
Seeing his wife's closed-off demeanor, Gilbert's frown deepened. He studied her for a long moment before finally speaking up. "Georgia, I know Ariana's temperament. If you just show her a little kindness and make up for past mistakes, she'll soften. She's not unreasonable."
But Georgia wasn't in the mood for lectures—especially not with this splitting headache.
Her patience snapped. She lifted her gaze sharply, her tone biting. "So, according to you, it's all my fault? Tell me, have I ever mistreated her all these years? No. But her? She’s held onto some petty grudge over minor neglect like it’s some lifelong vendetta. That alone shows how selfish she is deep down. Even if I tried to make amends, she’d never appreciate it."
Truth be told, she’d wanted to say this for ages.
As Ariana’s birth mother, it wasn’t that she disliked her.
But that girl was just so stubborn, so unyielding, that Georgia often found it hard to warm up to her. And now, she had the audacity to demand an apology?
All she’d done was overlook her a little. Was a daughter really entitled to force her own mother to grovel? That alone proved how vindictive Ariana was, blowing tiny grievances out of proportion. Yes, she might have favored Jane more, but there were reasons for that.
And it wasn’t as if Ariana had ever gone without.
Hadn’t she always given Ariana everything Jane had?
Sometimes, Georgia truly couldn’t understand how her own flesh and blood could be so consumed by jealousy.
If she didn’t know better, she’d have sworn there’d been a mix-up at the hospital.
Faced with his wife's furious demeanor, Gilbert momentarily found himself at a loss for words. He glanced at her icy expression, sighed, and softened his tone. "No one's talking about abuse here. But I admit we might have gone too far before. And you’ve always wanted Kiara to take over the White family business. Anyone in Ariana’s position would feel hurt by that."
Georgia wasn’t having any of it.
She lifted her chin and shot back, "Fine, I’ll admit I might’ve been wrong about that. But who said the White Family business is hers to inherit? It’s a family legacy—anyone with the surname White has a claim. Yet Ariana acts like it’s already hers. Doesn’t that make you uneasy? Doesn’t that scare you?"
Gilbert fell silent.
First stunned, then utterly bewildered, he stared at his wife, who was biting her lip. For a fleeting moment, her argument almost made sense—until he snapped out of it, realizing how twisted her logic was.
Sure, you could spin it that way.
But hearing those words from Georgia’s mouth felt... off.
