Gilbert didn't want to hear the name Jane.
Whether she had been deceived or whatever the reason might be, he would never forgive her. Anyone with even a shred of conscience wouldn't have betrayed the uncle and aunt who had treated her like their own daughter.
But she did.
No matter the justification, it left Gilbert utterly heartbroken.
He wouldn't make the same mistake twice.
So he truly had no intention of concerning himself with Jane anymore. Raising Kiara and seeing her married—that would be the best way to honor his late brother and sister-in-law.
At the thought of his brother, Gilbert couldn't help but sigh.
The bond between them had been unshakable.
When they were young, his brother had saved him from a near-fatal accident caused by his own recklessness. But that very incident had left his brother with a permanent leg injury. That was why, after his brother and sister-in-law passed away, he had taken Jane in and raised her as his own. Their brotherhood had been that strong.
Georgia glanced at her husband's stony expression, lips parting briefly before she swallowed her words in silence.
That evening, the family gathered around the dinner table, the atmosphere lively with chatter.
Ever since Kiara had defied Georgia's wishes, her aunt's warmth toward her had noticeably cooled. The change had weighed heavily on Kiara for a long time—she thought she had hurt her aunt deeply. But even if it pained Georgia, she absolutely couldn't take over the White family business. Otherwise, the heartache wouldn't be limited to just her aunt.
Though Ariana would never say it aloud, she would surely feel the sting too.
Not that Ariana cared about the money itself.
She would undoubtedly feel like Kiara had betrayed her by doing such a thing.
And Kiara would never do that.
So, for now, she had no choice but to let her aunt be upset. But she believed that in time, her aunt would come to understand that everything she had done was right—that it was for her own good. She didn’t want to see her aunt and Ariana grow further apart, either. After all, they were mother and daughter by blood.
At the dinner table, Gilbert glanced at Kiara and asked, "How’s Ariana doing? And the three kids—have they grown taller?"
He was genuinely fond of his grandchildren and cared about them deeply.
The moment Kiara heard her uncle mention Ariana, her face lit up with excitement. "Sister Ariana has been pretty busy lately, swamped with work. Little Luci has shot up again, and his English has improved a lot—he’s doing really well! The twins have grown a bit, too, and they’ve started babbling and trying to call people."
Kiara adored Ariana’s three children, and as she spoke, her eyes sparkled with joy.
Gilbert was visibly pleased by the news.
Nodding, he said, "That’s good to hear. I’m relieved."
Kiara continued, "Little Luci even asked about you and Auntie. He might come visit after the New Year." Once the holiday rush was over, Ariana would probably have more free time.
Even if she didn’t, Kiara could always bring her little nephew to visit his grandfather herself.
Sure enough, Gilbert was delighted. He chuckled warmly. "That’s wonderful. Your aunt and I haven’t seen Little Lucian in ages." He hadn’t even spent much time with the twins. Ever since the falling-out between Georgia and Ariana, he had forced himself to stay away to avoid fueling the tension between mother and daughter.
He had planned to visit once his daughter cooled off.
But then life got busy, and the matter slipped his mind.
Georgia, on the other hand, remained indifferent. Though a flicker of emotion passed through her eyes, she quickly regained her composure. Right now, what weighed most heavily on her mind wasn’t family—it was the matter of the White family’s assets.
