Vincent was startled, subconsciously stretched out his hand to grab the hand holding him, and broke free.
Subconsciously, he looked around and was relieved to see that there was no one around. He turned and glared at Jane, growling in annoyance, "What the hell are you doing?"
"Vincent, please don't be mad! I know you're still upset about Lambert, so I wanted to comfort you," Jane was frightened by him and shivered from head to toe, looking pitiful.
Vincent had been constantly bothered by Lambert's attempt to intervene, which was annoying enough. Seeing Jane acting so out of line now, he could not sympathize with her.
"I know you're jealous of Ariana, but this is the White Family's home. We can be caught behaving like this at any moment."
"Why are you taking out your anger on me, now?" Jane originally wanted to comfort Vincent, but she didn't expect to be roundly berated by him. She looked rather upset.
She chuckled out of annoyance, "Yes, I am jealous of Ariana, but aren't you also jealous of Lambert? You were backed down by Lambert and now you take your anger out on me?"
This was the first time Vincent had seen her lose her temper. He was taken aback for a moment. He massaged his forehead to soothe his mood. He had to admit, Jane had touched a sore spot indeed.
Although he was eager to get the White family's property, he also wanted to win Ariana. At least, he couldn't let Lambert snatch her away before he had his fill. Thus, upon hearing about the incident from Jane today, he had rushed over in a hurry.
Vincent admitted that Lambert indeed set off alarm bells for him.
He said coldly, "I'm going first."
When Jane saw he was going to leave just like that, she realized that she had said too much earlier.
After all, Vincent was a man. It was uncomfortable enough that he was overshadowed by Lambert, yet she had contradicted him.
"Vincent…"
She then hurried after him, intending to apologize, but Vincent simply ignored her.
In the following days, Vincent was worried that Ariana would be taken away by Lambert, and kept inviting her out.
However, because of what happened last time, Jane was constantly neglected by Vincent. No matter how she sent messages or called him, he either didn't answer or his secretary would take the call. If not, he just brushed her off with a few perfunctory remarks and said he was busy.
Unable to sit still any longer, Jane went to the Thomas Group personally to offer herself to him, but not only failed in her seduction but was also berated.
The feast of the elder of the Stone family was fast approaching. Georgia took Ariana to try on the clothes they had ordered.
At this time, Georgia arranged for a couple more sets to be made for Jane, as a consolation for her inability to attend the Stone family's banquet.
Decked out in a pink princess dress, Jane stood in front of the full-length mirror, her expression slightly pained.
Although she'd been compensated, Jane was still a bit upset. The thought of Ariana being able to go to the Stone family's banquet while she could not, filled her with a sense of inferiority due to her low status.
"So beautiful!"
In a dark red dress, Georgia looked extremely pleased with Jane. To her, Ariana and Jane had always suited the sweet and innocent look. As for Ariana, she preferred white.
Her smile was a little shy when Jane said, "Thank you, Auntie."
Seeing the hidden loss in her smile, Georgia apologized somewhat: "Jane, this time it was a special case. Once you are adopted, Auntie will take you and your sister to parties together to let everyone know about our Jane."
Ariana noticed the desolation in her eyes, giving her a knowing smile before turning to Georgia and asking in a playful tone, "Mom, can we really not take Jane with us? She has been living in our home for so long, she is practically your daughter by now, and many people know this!"
"No, according to tradition, it's not permissible. Moreover, we are going to attend the birthday banquet of the elder of the Stone Family. Taking her along is inappropriate," Georgia stated decisively.
However, she was very pleased with Ariana's thoughtful concern for Jane.
Jane's eyes trembled slightly, her smile straining as she said, "It's okay."
No matter how unhappy she was, she still had to keep up her act until the end.
Ariana smiled, looking at Georgia's makeup, and suggested, "Mom, do you want to extend your eyeliner a bit? I feel like it would make your eyes appear more enchanting and better match your dress today."
"Really?" Upon hearing this, Georgia immediately turned to face her makeup mirror. The attendant nearby promptly followed to assist her.
She glanced randomly at the slightly absent-minded Jane nearby and asked in a feigned concerned voice, "Would you like some water?"
Jane paused before nodding, "Sure."
With a smirk on her face, Ariana turned and handed Jane the glass of water that the attendant had prepared long ago.
As she reached out to take the glass, Ariana's hand slightly shifted, causing Jane to grab at thin air. The tall glass fell to the floor, creating a loud 'clink'.
People all around were startled. Georgia, who heard the noise from within, quickly came out to see what happened. Only to find out about Jane's failed catch.
Ariana pretended to be very apologetic, immediately checking up and down on Jane, "Jane, did you get hurt?"
