Chapter 98
DEAN
The scene shifted. I watched him–my second life self–exhaust every ounce of means at his disposal trying to take revenge on Brandon and Claire.
But strangely… he never succeeded. Not once.
On the contrary, those two only thrived. Becoming outrageously successful.
power and every
I use the word outrageous deliberately–because in my opinion, their rise in that life defied reason as their level of success simply didn’t match their capabilities.
Something was amiss.
It felt almost… as if they were being shielded by some unseen, metaphysical force.
As though luck itself bent reality in their favor.
And while revenge on those two always failed, I witnessed the rest of the Caldwells fall into misfortune, one by one.
Their parents died in a car crash on their way to a gala.
Julian became disabled after another tragic accident.
Marissa–betrayed by her beloved boyfriend had her designs stolen, and was then accused of plagiarism. The stress and desperation of fighting to prove her innocence led to health breakdown, and before long she was bedridden.
And just like that, Emerald City’s foremost family declined into ruin, while the Scotts rose to replace them.
Absurd. Utterly ridiculous.
Those were my thoughts as I watched it unfold before my very eyes
While I didn’t particularly like the Caldwells, considering how they treated Lilith, I also couldn’t deny their strength.
So for them to crumble so easily…

…made absolutely no sense.
But no one was there to address my doubts or questions as everything gradually faded away into
darkness.
Then I jolted awake, drenched in cold sweat with my chest heaving violently.
For a long second, I sat in the darkness of my lounge, struggling to separate dream from reality.
But… were those truly dreams?
A voice deep inside me whispered–no.
No, they were too detailed. Too logical. Too real.
I pressed a trembling hand against my chest.
Those events had really happened. Those “dreams” were my past lives.
But one detail struck me as odd.
My second life self.
He had never crossed paths with Lilith in that life, so why–after clutching his head–did he suddenly know her?
Did he regain his first life’s memories at that moment? Or was he simply reliving the second?
I leaned toward the latter.
The desperation in his voice as he ran from the meeting room, and most of all, the words he muttered when told she was gone-
“I’m late again.”
A chill shot down my spine.
Elise.
Was she… truly fine?
Terror suddenly seized my chest, my breath hitching as I fumbled for the lamp and snatched up my phone with shaking fingers.
As it rang, dread churned in my stomach.

What if she didn’t pick up?

What if I was already inside that second life? If my counterpart had been forced to relive it, what guarantee did I have that I wouldn’t?
What if she was already
The dark spiral shattered when a hesitant voice finally came through from the phone’s speaker.
“Dean?”
Just that one word.
And my vision blurred.
She was here.
Still alive. Still fine.
Relief slammed into me so violently I almost couldn’t breathe.
Even now, sitting on this plane, my chest felt tight, unable to relax completely.
I’d heard her voice. I knew she was alright.
And yet… until I saw her with my own eyes, I wouldn’t truly believe it.
Regardless-
My gaze turned cold.
I would never let that nightmare become her reality.
Never.
Stepping out of the terminal, I scanned the sea of strangers with single–minded urgency.
For one heart–stopping second, I thought I wouldn’t find her–that her voice on the phone had only been my imagination.
And then… there she was.
Standing at arrivals in a pale pink tee and black jeans, her gaze sweeping through the crowd.

I watched as a loose strand of hair slipped from her ponytail, brushing against her cheek. Watched her frown slightly, lower her head and tuck it back
And when her eves lifted again, our gazes met.
Something inside me eased instantly–like a taut string finally snapping loose.
I took a step forward, then another, until my strides lengthened with urgency. I didn’t care about the curious glances, the people shifting out of my way.
All I could see… was her.
Alive. Safe. Waiting for me.
By the time I reached her, I didn’t bother with words. I simply pulled her into my arms, holding her so tightly it felt like I wanted to fuse her into my very being.
“I missed you, Elise.”
LILITH
My mind went completely blank the moment Dean hugged me.
What the hell was he doing?!
We were in the middle of a crowd for goodness sake! At an airport, no less!
Embarrassed, I tried to squirm out of his embrace, but that only made him tighten his grip.
And then… I noticed.
His body was trembling.
I froze. My brows drawing together against his chest.
Something was wrong. Deeply wrong with him.
