Rebirth: Solely Cherished by the Devoted Commander novel Chapter 408

Chapter 408: Chapter 434: Flood Resistance

These people braved the rain, walking ahead, checking each household in the village. Everyone was unwilling to leave their homes. In some houses, the water was already over a foot deep, but families were hiding on rooftops and still refused to leave.

A stubborn old man shouted, "A ruined home is worth a fortune! We can’t leave, how could it just happen to flood our home by chance!"

Gu Junming patiently explained, and when he couldn’t get them to understand, he forcibly took them away.

The villagers were more concerned about their grain and livestock. In the homes of the young people, there were valuable items like televisions and sewing machines. They wanted the soldiers to help take them. Their big trucks seemed quite large.

Gu Junming was filled with anger, thinking, we’re here to save your lives, not to move house! But he calmly said, "Each family can only take one item. If everyone loads up, others won’t be able to get on the truck. You decide for yourself! Lives are at stake, hurry up! What’s the use of having valuable stuff if you lose your life?"

Most people complied, but a few stubborn old folks refused to come out. A young soldier tried to drag them out, getting scratches on his hands, but they refused to leave.

"You’re bullying us, are you bandits? Why can’t I stay in my own house!"

Some soldiers were pissed, thinking we’re doing this for your own good, and yet we get cursed?

Gu Junming checked his watch, "These people must be taken! Time is of the essence!"

He personally got involved, lifting the old people up. These two stubborn ones were thrown into the truck, still shouting, but no one paid them any mind.

Next, they helped move the sick and weak who couldn’t move on their own to the truck and continued to the next village. There were people on the truck crying and shouting, saying they would report to higher-ups.

"You bastards, they should strip you of your ranks!"

Gu Junming acted as if he hadn’t heard a thing, remaining calm.

Yan Kai faced the same chaos, but managed to get everyone out before the flood hit.

When the two met up that night, they saw each other’s faces covered in wounds from scratches, and couldn’t help but laugh.

"Pretty chaotic over there too?"

"Absolutely, they’re still complaining, someone even said they’d report to higher-ups to have me removed." Gu Junming laughed, utterly unconcerned.

Luckily they evacuated in time. Not long after they left, a massive flood submerged the village, and those shouting villagers finally quieted down.

Yan Kai said, "Got anything to eat? Two days of eating dry buns is driving me crazy."

"Got two bunches of noodles, packed by Sun Chan. Just add some salt."

"Great!" Yan Kai happily went to get the noodles.

Just then, a flash of white light outside the tent was followed by rumbling thunder and the torrential rain poured down. Yan Kai and Gu Junming exchanged a glance, both with a complex expression, worried that some of the more peripheral farmland and homes might not hold up.

They were on high ground, but even at night, water seeped in as they slept. They laid a layer of plastic and wooden boards to ward off dampness, yet still woke up to soaked bedding, and many soldiers had developed rashes.

Gu Junming got up early to light the stove, letting everyone take turns drying themselves and their bedding, and distributed some ointment for the rashes.
