Huo Jingrui, upon hearing Yunyi’s question, halted with the chicken leg in mid-air, unable to respond for a moment.
When he finally did, he retracted his hand with a slightly awkward gesture. "Well, I just thought you would like it. If not, I can get you something else."
Yunyi waved it off with a smile. "No need, I really do love chicken legs."
However, after saying this, Yunyi cautiously voiced her doubts. "If we could descend the mountain by just lighting a few torches, why are we spending a night here before going down?"
Huo Jingrui originally didn’t want to say anything, but fearing she might let down her guard, he lowered his voice. "For such an important matter, the people behind them wouldn’t send just this one group."
Yunyi immediately understood. "You think someone might be coming to rescue them?"
Huo Jingrui nodded slightly. "This gives them enough time, and us time to recover. Most importantly, this is deep in the mountains. If my suspicions are correct, it won’t endanger the villagers below."
Yunyi hadn’t expected Huo Jingrui, a man, to be so considerate.
But that’s not quite right, she thought. Rather than saying he’s considerate, it’s more like he’s gambling.
He’s betting that those people will show up—that the rescue is a facade and silencing them is the real goal.
Afterward, the two of them stopped talking. Yunyi nibbled on her chicken leg, while Huo Jingrui gnawed on two rabbit legs.
Yunyi cast a glance at Huo Jingrui, who ate elegantly, and couldn’t help but be reminded of little details from the past.
Noticing her gaze, Huo Jingrui thought she wanted to try the rabbit leg. "Would you like some?"
Feeling slightly embarrassed by his question, Yunyi quickly shook her head. "No need, I was just thinking about something."
Huo Jingrui didn’t inquire further but, seeming to remember something, quickly stood up. He took several apricots out of his pocket and handed them to Yunyi. "Here, eat these."

Seeing her happy, a smile also appeared on Huo Jingrui’s lips. He himself was unaware of his unusual behavior.
