Yunyi had one foot on the pedal, ready to set off, when she paused again. "Big Sister, what’s wrong?"
The older woman was now walking with a limp. It seemed that when she fell, her leg had been trapped under her bicycle and bruised by something hard in the ditch. She hadn’t paid much attention to it at the time.
Yunyi looked at her leg. "Is your leg okay?"
The older woman waved her hand dismissively. "Just a bump, it’s nothing serious."
Coming closer to Yunyi, the woman glanced around. "Girl, are you from the village down there?"
Yunyi didn’t quite understand what the woman meant, so she didn’t mention she was an educated youth. She simply nodded. "Yes."
The older woman grabbed Yunyi’s handlebars. "My name is Cui Tanghua. Thank you for your help today. I don’t like being indebted to anyone, so let me share a little tip with you."
Yunyi wanted to refuse, but Cui Tanghua didn’t give her the chance and continued, "My husband works at the machinery factory in the county town. They’re hiring temporary workers soon, and there’s a recruitment exam in three days. However, applicants must have a high school diploma. If you know anyone suitable in your family, they could try out."
After speaking, she released Yunyi’s handlebars. "Alright, I won’t keep you any longer. You should get going."
Yunyi hadn’t expected the woman to be so sincere. "Thank you, Big Sister," she said.
With that, she waved goodbye to Cui Tanghua and cycled towards the village.
If her memory served her correctly, the Branch Secretary’s youngest son had a high school diploma. She might have considered the factory job if she weren’t going to the Hua’an Farm Reclamation. But now, it wasn’t on her mind, especially since traveling to the county town from the mountains was inconvenient. She preferred her freedom.
After storing her things, she took her basket and headed for the back mountain. Her hands were itching to carve; now that she had the tools, she wanted to find some wood she could use right away.
She had also wanted to hang the cured meat, but the spot for sun-drying it was no longer in direct sunlight. She decided it could wait until she went up the mountain for her morning practice. After adding enough firewood for the current smoking, she left to find suitable wood for carving.
