Yunyi was unaware that even though she donated her prize money, some people were still eyeing her.
She was currently engrossed in listening to the women nearby gossiping. "I heard that tomorrow the brigade is going to clean the pond by the main road."
"Really? Who told you that? Does that mean we’ll get to share some fish?"
"We should get a share, though it might not be much."
Yunyi’s eyes lit up at the mention of ’Qingtang.’
If Qingtang was really going to happen, then she would delay her departure by a day. She had dug up quite a bit of soil from the mountains for the pond in her space, but that soil couldn’t compare to the silt from a real pond.
She planned to get some for her space so that she could plant the aquatic plants she had collected from the south.
Listening to the gossip of those around her was far from boring. When it finally came Yunyi’s turn, she almost made people burst out laughing. After deducting the grain the village had loaned her, she received only twelve pounds of grain.
Of that, only two pounds were fine grain, which was the village’s way of looking after her.
After all, these new educated youth had been there for less than a year, and their rations were calculated monthly.
Even the days she spent on disaster relief were included. Otherwise, she feared she would have ended up owing grain instead.
Looking at the grain she received, she laughed to herself. If I didn’t have this ace up my sleeve, how would I get by?
With no one else behind her, Yunyi tried to ask, "Branch Secretary, may I ask if I can buy some extra grain from the village?"
The Branch Secretary was taken aback. "At Hua’an Farm Reclamation, there’s a communal canteen. It wouldn’t be convenient to cook if you bring your own grain."
His words confused everyone present. They exchanged puzzled glances and then shook their heads, indicating they didn’t understand.
Yunyi understood the Branch Secretary was looking out for her. "I’ve already asked. To make my work more convenient, I’ll be living in the small courtyard behind the health center after I move. It should be fine to cook for myself occasionally."
The Branch Secretary laughed. "You’re certainly lucky! I’ve visited a few times, and only those who were married and had families got private rooms. Everyone else had to stay in the communal dormitories."
