“Emily, meet the family I’ve arranged to adopt Liam,” Aaron introduced the couple standing beside him to Emily.
Emily nodded at the couple. “Thanks for your help.
“Don’t worry, Ms. Johnson. We’ll take good care of everything,” the couple assured her.
Emily smiled at Aaron. “Time’s tight. Let’s get moving.”
With that, Emily and Aaron walked ahead, the couple following closely behind.
What Emily didn’t know was that Eli was using his influence to pressure the director into agreeing to the adoption.
Sophia was indeed trying to buy time.
But as a young woman who didn’t meet the adoption criteria, she was outmatched in every way–numbers, authority, and conditions.
“Mr. Johnson, instead of adopting another kid, why don’t you treat your own daughter better? If you can’t even be good to your own blood, how can anyone believe you’ll be good to Liam? Just let him go, Sophia said sarcastically, throwing caution to the wind.
The Brown family was powerful, but the Johnson family was equally formidable, especially with the backing of the Smith family, making
them even more influential.
“Sophia, I know you don’t get along with Bianca, and I’ve never held it against you. But now you’re interfering with my business and speaking to me like this? I’ll have a word with your father about your upbringing,” Eli said sternly, assuming the role of an elder scolding a junior.
Sophia was disgusted by Eli’s attitude.
She didn’t want to waste words with him and focused on getting Liam away.
Ignoring Eli, she hurried to Liam’s side and tried to pull him towards her.
But the bodyguard, following Eli’s orders, didn’t let go.
Sophia tugged a bit harder, but the bodyguard’s grip tightened, causing Liam pain. Unfamiliar with both Sophia and Eli, Liam was scared and in pain, and he started crying.
Sophia’s heart softened, and she had to let go.
Eli remained indifferent. ‘Director, you see, this girl is just causing trouble. She’s barely an adult herself and doesn’t respect her elders. I’m clearly the better choice to adopt this child, don’t you think?”
*If you agree, I’ll make another donation to the orphanage. But if you don’t, I doubt this place will stay open for long,” Eli threatened.
The director’s face darkened, realizing Eli wasn’t a kind person. This didn’t bode well for Liam, but the director had to consider the other children, too.

Just as the director was about to reluctantly agree, he said, ‘Fine, Mr. Johnson, please take good care of the child. If you ever decide you don’t want Liam, bring him back rather than let him suffer.”
Eli, impatient from the start, was in no mood to waste more time. He had been summoned by Isaac earlier, only to be dismissed without any real reason, clearly a ploy to annoy him. He suspected it was Emily’s doing, and he wanted to use Liam to threaten her.
“Alright, I get it. Director, just get the paperwork done so I can take him,” Eli said irritably.
“No, you can’t!” Sophia blocked the way, arms outstretched.
Eli looked at Sophia coldly. “Your dad’s not here, so I’ll teach you a lesson. You, pull her away.”
He signaled the bodyguards to act.
“Let go of me…
Help! They’re bullying a girl!” Sophia shouted, flailing her arms to keep them at bay.
“Stop!”
Just as Sophia was about to be overpowered, Emily arrived just in time.
She shouted, and before anyone could react, she grabbed one of the bodyguards‘ wrists, making him release his grip in pain.
Emily quickly pulled Sophia behind her and faced Eli with a cold stare.
*Perfect timing. You’ve become even more of a disgrace, siding with Sophia. You know she doesn’t get along with Bianca. It’s clear that you’ve been bullying Bianca all along. You’re hopeless, Eli snarled, his face dark with anger.
Emily was numb to his accusations. Her eyes fell on the crying Liam, held by the bodyguard.
“You’re no better, bullying a three–year–old. Let Liam go, or you’ll regret it,” Emily said, her voice icy and fearless.
*You dare threaten me? Grab her!” Eli ordered, laughing in anger.
This time, he witnessed Emily’s strength firsthand.
The bodyguards barely approached her before they were on the ground after just a few moves.
“Adoption isn’t a fight. I have a family here ready to adopt Liam. You won’t take him,” Emily said, stepping aside to reveal the couple
behind her.
She turned to the director. “I have a qualified couple ready to adopt. Can you process the paperwork? We have all the necessary documents.”
“And if I refuse? I don’t care who you brought. You’re not taking him from me!” Eli blocked Liam, preventing Emily from getting close.
Emily’s eyes narrowed dangerously.
