’Esther and I broke up because she betrayed me. But I can’t let go of the love I have for her, overnight.’
Sitting in the cab, Ella reflected on Mo Jun’s response.
’Is something like love more important than everything you stand for?’ She asked him rather challengingly.
After all, from her perspective, there was some mismatch between Violet, Esther and Mo Jun. As someone who doesn’t know who he is supposed to love, how can he make big claims about it?
Didn’t she also spend lifetimes thinking she loved Max? How did it turn out?
’Ella, when you love someone, you don’t even realize it until you are too deep into it,’ Mo Jun responded with a small smile, ’They can be completely different from you. They can stand on the opposite of everything you stand for. Yet, it is too late for you to think about it...’
’Because you already love them. You think of them, dream of them, wish for them, care for them... They consume you, like nobody has ever before.’
Ella laughed at that, ’I never thought you were such a poet.’
Yet, now as she sat in the cab and looked out at the gradually darkening sky, Ella found herself haunted by those words.
’’That guy must be doing poetry..." Ella shifted in the car seat.
At this moment, she noticed something.
"This is not the right way..." She glanced at the old man who took a weird turn.
"Miss, it’s a shortcut."
Ella nodded as she sat straighter.
The old driver looked at her from the rearview mirror when she was not noticing.
His eyes darkened ominously when he saw that she was sitting still, without any signs of suspicion.
He lowered his gaze and took another sharp tone. And suddenly—
’Bam’
A heavy handbag hit the side of his head, right at the spot above his ears, "Y-You..." His ears rang, his vision went blurry.
Ella bolted out of the car, holding the closed door tight as she watched the man sinking down on the seat, struggling to stay conscious.
"I have never had good experiences with shortcuts."
Once the driver dropped unconscious and showed no signs of further movements, Ella grabbed a stone from the ground and opened the car door.
With cautious movements, she scanned through the man’s body for any clue. Yet after a thorough search, she found nothing on the man.
Just as Ella began to retreat, a hand clamped around her wrist.
Her blood turned cold.
Ella slowly looked up. But seeing that the driver’s eyes were still closed, her heart settled down.
"Ella?"
Ella turned around when she heard the familiar voice. She glanced at Mo Jun, "Why are you here?"
Mo Jun raised his hand, showing her the phone in his grip.
Ella instinctively touched her bag, only to realize that her phone was missing from it.
Mo Jun’s gaze scanned over the entire place once before he looked at her, "I will drop you."
Given her current circumstances, Ella could not be bothered to keep up appearances so she tagged along with him.
On the way, Mo Jun did not ask her any questions and she was pretty grateful for that.
At first, Ella asked him to drop her on a random road.
But then, Mo Jun looked at her weirdly, "Considering what happened earlier, it would be risky..."

"I couldn’t breathe..."
Holy cow, it better not be anything ominous!
