When Wen Qing hung up the phone, her expression was complex.
But what is meant to happen will always happen.
Though she had harbored a grudge against Sang Ran for letting Lin Zhiyi go all those years ago, it was also thanks to Sang Ran that she managed to establish herself in front of the old master.
Who would have thought that in the end, she would have to personally send Sang Ran off.
She hoped Sang Ran wouldn’t resent her.
If anyone was to blame, it was Sang Ran for being useless, unable to even compete against Lin Zhiyi.
And besides, over the past three years, who’s had it better anyway?
Wen Qing herself was merely putting on a glamorous front.
Because of Lin Zhiyi, Sang Li, and Sang Ran’s intertwined relationships, the Sang Family had grown increasingly distant from her.
The people within their circles were well-informed yet indifferent. Once they sensed Sang Li’s detachment from her, almost all began to alienate her.
Especially after Gong Chen joined forces with the madames, cutting off all her routes to maneuver—it became even harder to make progress.
Lost in thought, Wen Qing noticed Gong Shiyan, who had previously entered the hospital, walking out again.
Ever since Gong Chen promoted him to the position of Vice President, Gong Shiyan seemed like a completely different person.
The Second Young Master, who anyone would dare tease in the past, now seemed reborn.
He shed his facade of gentle sincerity, walking with firm strides, his brows and eyes brimming once more with the confident radiance of his youth, even appearing much younger.
This is the way he should have always been.
If it hadn’t been for him uncovering her secret of using women to curry favor with the old master, they would surely have been a pair envied by all.
Wen Qing stepped toward Gong Shiyan, but the smile on her lips froze the moment she spotted Liu He.
Gong Shiyan was carrying a woman’s handbag; upon seeing Liu He, he hurriedly shielded her.
"Why did you follow me? It’s so windy today."
"I forgot to grab the gift I got for Xingxing and wanted to call you, only to realize my phone was in my bag," Liu He replied helplessly.
Gong Shiyan chuckled softly: "Why have you been so scatterbrained recently? Something on your mind?"
"No, let’s go."
After retrieving the gift absentmindedly, Liu He followed Gong Shiyan back into the inpatient building.
Wen Qing watched the pair’s retreating figures, her face tense.
After a moment, she lifted her chin with pride. She would not lose.
After all, Liu He had been drinking the herbal medicine she meticulously prepared all along.
In the past two years, Liu He had avoided almost every unnecessary occasion. Even when she did appear, people often remarked that her condition seemed poor.
And now she’s entangled with a young man.
She was doomed.
As Wen Qing turned away, her assistant stepped forward. "President Wen, is the old master planning to..."
Wen Qing withdrew her gaze and sneered: "Once there’s a child, Sang Ran’s worth will be completely depleted. But simply letting her die of illness is meaningless—the old master wants everyone to witness her painful demise, especially Sang Li and the Third Young Master."
"Sang Li is Sang Ran’s biological brother. Watching his sister suffer, how could he not develop resentment toward the Third Young Master? And how could he possibly face Lin Zhiyi without any bitterness?"
"Not only that, but if Sang Ran dies in the moment of the Third Young Master’s greatest guilt over her, then Sang Ran’s value will be maximized."
"The living can’t compete with the dead, let alone when the dead leave behind a child."
"Heh, the old master is indeed cunning. He never intends to let anyone walk away unscathed. Perhaps even in death, he’ll orchestrate a scenario to keep everyone suffocated in their grievances."
"Let’s go."
Wen Qing got into the car and left, waiting to see the spectacle unfold tomorrow.
...
Inside the hospital room.
Lin Zhiyi emerged from the restroom and immediately noticed the "artwork" on Gong Chen’s face.
She quickly covered her mouth, restraining her laughter.
"My mom said she’d be here soon. Do you want to wash up first?"
In truth, she was barely keeping herself from bursting out laughing. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Gong Chen stood up, nodded solemnly, but his gaze toward her carried an air of danger.
After he washed his face and came back out, Liu He and Gong Shiyan happened to knock and enter the room.
Lin Zhiyi let out a slight sigh of relief. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
"Second Madam, rest assured, I promise not to spread any rumors." Liao Yi vowed while rapidly changing the subject, "Let me pour you some water. Please sit and chat."
With that, Liao Yi quickly grabbed the kettle and fled, afraid she might overhear more secrets.
Xingxing climbed down from the bed, excitedly running toward the toy in Liu He’s hand.
"Grandma."
"Oh!" Liu He joyfully leaned down to hug Xingxing but suddenly hesitated, handing her the toy instead. "My back’s been bothering me lately, so I can’t lift you up."
"That’s okay, Grandma’s even prettier than in the videos." Xingxing said sweetly while clutching the toy.
"What a darling."
As Liu He stared at Xingxing, she gently stroked her head.
Even Gong Shiyan seemed visibly dazed.
Lin Zhiyi glanced at them and immediately understood that they were thinking about the child they had lost.
She promptly looked at Gong Chen.
Gong Chen caught on. "Let’s sit down and chat."
"Alright."
Gong Shiyan guided Liu He to sit with him.
After a brief conversation, Liu He’s phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen and suddenly seemed restless.
Lin Zhiyi sensed Liu He was troubled.
She took the opportunity to say, "Mom, could you help me sort out some stuff? Xingxing’s hospital stay probably doesn’t require so much luggage."
"Sure." Liu He set her phone aside and began sorting items by the cabinet.
Lin Zhiyi sneaked a look at the two seated on the couch, then whispered to Liu He, "Mom, what’s going on with you? You seem preoccupied."
Liu He’s movements paused. "Nothing."
"Mom, are you still trying to hide things from me?" Lin Zhiyi pressed her gaze firmly onto Liu He.
"Truly, it’s nothing." Liu He kept her head down and continued organizing.
Realizing she wouldn’t get anything out of her mother, Lin Zhiyi changed direction, asking, "Could it be related to the herbal medicine back then?"
