The butler had no way out and helplessly looked towards an empty hospital room.
Gong Chen glanced at Chen Jin and pushed the butler to open the door of the hospital room.
Old Mr. Gong sat on the sofa, his expression unhappy.
Upon hearing the numerous footsteps, he knew the plan had failed.
But he maintained his dignity and was not afraid.
However, when he met the eyes of Gong Chen and Gong Shiyan, he felt an inexplicable chill in his heart.
"What? You’re here to confront me?"
Gong Shiyan spoke with restrained anger: "Why? You’ve already caused the death of one of my children!"
"Was it me who didn’t allow you to have children?" Old Mr. Gong retorted, "Children like that will only be a burden to you!"
"No!"
Gong Shiyan glared at Old Mr. Gong with clenched teeth.
He stepped forward and said solemnly, "He is my child, not a pawn. He just needs to grow up happily; he is not me."
"Ridiculous! Why are you so stubborn? Without Liu He and Lin Zhiyi, you could have married a well-matched wife, been successful in business, had a prosperous family, and noble children. What are you dissatisfied with? Instead, you choose to cause discord in the family for their sakes!"
Old Mr. Gong looked at the brothers with authority.
He cast a vicious glance at Lin Zhiyi in passing.
People from noble families, are they not all like this?
Don’t they all live well?
Why am I so unlucky to have three rebellious children!
One faked death and disappeared.
One married a divorced woman with a child.
One protected a bastard without regard to status.
And there’s one who isn’t even competent!
Lin Zhiyi wanted to step forward and argue, but was blocked by Gong Chen.
Gong Chen stared at Old Mr. Gong, his eyes showing no emotion.
No expectations, no disappointments.
The rift between father and son was already insurmountable.
He said coldly, "And then what?"
Old Mr. Gong frowned, "What do you mean, ’and then’?"
Gong Chen did not step forward, letting out a slight huff.
"And then, like you, living in mutual suspicion with your spouse, afraid that one day they might surpass you."
"Then find the right moment to swallow them up, and boast about your achievements outside, with mistresses around, and continuous illegitimate offspring?"
"In the end, not only do you have to guard against illegitimate children, but also against your own sons, relatives, and friends. And now, you even have to guard against a premature baby. You’ve done too many things with a guilty conscience to trust anyone."
"There’s a sword hanging over your head that will only disappear the moment you die, isn’t that right?"
Old Mr. Gong’s breathing hitched, and he clasped his clenched fists behind his back.
"What nonsense are you talking about?"
"Mom loved you." Gong Shiyan spoke bitterly, "She never resented you, even after giving birth to Lao San. While taking care of me and my elder brother, she often spoke of your younger days."
He looked at Old Mr. Gong with reluctance.
But that venomous gaze could no longer align with the spirited man in his mother’s stories.
Old Mr. Gong’s lips moved as if to say something, but he bit his teeth harshly.
Gong Shiyan continued, "You always said Lao San was distant from you because mom thought that as long as she gave birth to your child, you would reconcile. But your heart was too big, filled with too many people, and those fleeting moments of warmth were like poison eroding mom’s last affection."
"She began to complain to Lao San, being especially harsh with him. How could Lao San be close to you? He was so young, he should have been the happiest."
"In the past, only you lived recklessly and freely in this household, so of course you thought everything was fine! But did you ever ask us?"
"Why should we live like you? We just want to live our own lives."
